The 2018 Newton County Relay For Life event is fast approaching.  A premier fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life in Newton County brings the community together to support cancer research and hopefully eliminate cancer in the very near future.  With approximately 60 community teams involved, the Relay event will again be held at The Church At Covington on Highway 142 in Covington. Beginning with opening ceremonies at 6 pm on Friday, April 27, this year’s event will close at midnight as we ring in a new day and become one step closer to finding a cure for cancer.

Relay For Life began in the USA in May 1985 when colorectal surgeon,  Dr. Gordy Klatt, wanted to raise awareness of cancer and boost the income of his local cancer charity. He spent a grueling twenty-four hours circulating a track in Tacoma, Washington, and raised over US$27,000, and showed that one person really could make a difference.

Since then, Relay For Life has become the most significant fundraising event for cancer in the world. Celebrated by more than 4 million people in over 20 countries, this inspirational overnight event empowers and unites local communities to fight cancer.

Our Honorary Survivor Chairperson this year is Kelly Todd.  Kelly has battled cancer since birth and is an inspiration to all of us.  Her story brings to life the everyday battles of a cancer survivor and how far a positive attitude can go in the fight against the horrible disease.

Relay 2018 will be an event to remember.  The theme this year is Disney and each team is expected to bring their best Disney costumes and decorations.  Each team will also have individual fundraisers available such as food, crafts, games, and more. There will be something available for the entire family.  The entertainment schedule will be top notch with some our community’s best singers including the Cousins Middle School Chorus, April Allen, Carrie Bowen, and Parks McIntosh.  Other activities include the Beauty and the Beast Ms. Relay Contest, the Begging Babies, the Road to Recovery Car Race, Nemo’s Sponge Relay, the Imagination Photo Scavenger Hunt, a FROZEN    T-shirt Contest, and Hercules and the Beast vs. Darth Vader and the Hulk Tug of War.

With almost everyone being touched by cancer in some way, Relay is the perfect opportunity to help fight cancer through food, fun, and fundraising.  The community is invited to join us on Friday, April 27 at The Church At Covington to help support finding a cure for cancer.
