He understood that everything he held dear in this world could be taken from him in an instant, yet he wore his badge and wore it with honor, Chief Scott said.

Comstock told the story of Benedetti’s life, which was all too short.

The son of two Italian immigrants, Benedetti cherished his Italian roots.

Benedetti was born on 31. Born in March 1984 in San Francisco, the son of Giampietro Benedetti and Rita Ginocchio Benedetti, who emigrated to the United States as teenagers to build a life in this new country.

Mr. Benedetti moved to San Luis Obispo, SLO, in 2002 to study computer engineering at Cal Poly.

While still in college, he worked as a bouncer at The Library bar in downtown SLO. That’s where he met his future wife, Grace, in 2006. They were connected by their shared love of family, craft beer and friends.

Sergeant Caleb Kemp, SLOPD, said of Benedetti: Detective Luca Benedetti died with the heart of a warrior, serving his community and doing what he loved. I want to thank the Benedetti family for sharing with the rest of the world, and I thank Luca for sharing himself with all of us.

Colleagues, in this time of mourning, do not be carried away by the guilt we all feel. Guilt for what happened, guilt for not stopping it. Feeling guilty for being sad when your family’s situation is far worse than ours. The guilt of reliving happy moments or the guilt of just living when Luke can’t.

We will heal, we will never forget, but we will heal. Luke’s sacrifice and legacy will forever be engraved on the lives he touched while living life to the fullest.

The police car parked on the SLOPD lawn is Unit 1609, which was and is Benedetti’s.

Following the service, Mr. Benedetti was led in a procession, along with police officers from across the state, to his final resting place in the Paso Robles Cemetery, where a private burial service was held.

The Redding and Menlo Park Police Department, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Fresno City Police Department, Manhattan Beach Police Department and San Diego County Sheriff’s Office are just some of the agencies involved.

Citizens, local police, fire and emergency services gathered along the Northern 101 freeway and overpasses. They wave American flags, show their support and stand to salute a fallen officer.

Brotherhood for the Fallen, a nonprofit organization that provides volunteer support to families and communities of fallen officers in the United States, sent liaison members from Texas and New York.

A flyer handed out during the service said this about Benedetti:

Luca, a man of few words and silence, locks himself away at home to share his tender and foolish side with his wife and two daughters. Luca has always been eager to learn and has tackled everything from renovating a bathroom to building his own wood-fired pizza oven. He loved to cook and always said: Why go to a restaurant when I can cook better?

Luke also enjoyed hunting, shooting and gardening.

Luca is survived and will always be loved by his wife Grace, his daughters Elisabetta (age 6) and Giovanna (age 2), his parents Giampietro and Rita, his sister Carla, her husband and son, and many relatives and friends.

The world is a better place because of Luke, and he will always be our hero.
