In an effort to get the world to focus on the climate change problem, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is dedicating an exhibit to the subject. The exhibit, titled “Artists Respond: Climate Change and the Visual Arts”, will display works by some of the world’s most prominent artists, who will respond to the rising threat of climate change.
The world is experiencing a warming trend, and the effects are already being felt at an accelerated pace. Truth: Sea levels are rising and glaciers are melting, leading to a host of climate change related impacts.
Climate change is a difficult news item every day. The natural disasters plaguing the planet – fires, floods and droughts – are making the art news thanks to two events.
Arts and Sciences
The Smithsonian Institution reports on a contemporary art exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History. The exhibition, titled Unsettled Nature, shows a nature suffering from human behavior and asks the question: What is natural when the world is so influenced by man?
Scott Wing, curator of the National Museum of Natural History, teamed up with Joanna Marsh, curator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, this week to create an exhibit that takes a fresh look at climate change.
Wing, who studies fossils to learn more about Earth’s past climate, was quoted in a museum press release as saying that scientists need to find ways to communicate with the public: We thought that art and science together could be a more powerful way to influence both people’s emotions and intelligence.
Hard truths
The exhibition, titled Unsettled Nature, aims to remind people that they themselves are an unsettled nature. Wing and Marsh have selected artists who challenge public consciousness in original ways. Bethany Taylor’s woven tapestry depicting a burning Amazon forest hanging next to a fire extinguisher illustrates this idea. Wait, there’s more.
Around her tapestry she has attached animal forms that are connected with threads. Pull a rope and they all unravel, Taylor said.
I love this metaphor of connectivity.
Other land art news: the finalists for the annual Wellcome Photography Prize have been announced – a total of 90 artists from 15 countries. Winners will be announced on the 28th. July announced on YouTube.
Global health
Wellcome is an independent charity that supports science in tackling the pressing health issues facing everyone.
Wellcome’s photo contest, now in its third year, focuses on three areas of global health: mental health, global warming and infectious diseases.
Of course, one could argue that mental health, global warming and infectious diseases are not separate problems. Wellcome’s press release points out that our increasingly hot world is not only synonymous with forest fires and lack of clean water leading to disease, but also with skin cancer.
Of particular interest in this section are photos showing the catastrophic effects of climate change on nature. According to a press release from Wellcome, the selected photographers must tell the story.
Public awareness
Since global warming is a public health problem that will be difficult to solve without public support, the Wellcome believes that involving artists in telling the story can make the problem clearer. One of the shortlisted photographers was Krisztian Bucci from Germany for his photo titled Elimination of Fossil Fuels. It looks like before-and-after shots – a green scene with an approaching fire in the distance.
The faster the world can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Bouchey said in his speech, the better we can prevent the health risks of global warming. He should be proud of his government.
Germany has committed to phase out its use of coal by 2038.
But wait, even if all countries did the same, we’d still be inherently adversarial. I’m reminded of a National Public Radio report in May that said a billion birds die every year from collisions with skyscrapers. I’m just saying.
