mollyfamwatAfter the blockbuster trade that sent Duncan Keith to the Chicago Blackhawks for J.J. (Jay) Harrison, the Edmonton Oilers sent a prospect named Matt Fraser to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a second-round pick and a player to be named later.
The last week or so has been a whirlwind of rumors on the Chicago Blackhawks and the Edmonton Oilers. It started on Tuesday with the Hawks acquiring free agent forward Duncan Keith from the Anaheim Ducks for second and third round picks in the National Hockey League Draft. The deal will bring Keith to Chicago, along with fellow defenseman Corey Crawford, giving the Hawks a top flight defensive corps and one of the NHL’s fastest and most productive blue lines. The Oilers, meanwhile, will be losing the reigning Norris trophy winner, who was traded to the Ducks in a deal that saw goalie Jonathan Bernier and winger Taylor Hall leave the organization.
The Edmonton Oilers acquired veteran Duncan Keith from the Chicago Blackhawks and rookie forward Tim Soderlund on Monday in exchange for defenseman Caleb Jones and a conditional third-round pick for 2022, a source confirmed to ESPN.

It removes a player from the lineup who has a minus-8 goals against average (third worst in the league, minimum 100 games) over the last two NHL seasons. That takes $5,538,462 away from Chicago’s cap hit, which could be used to improve some of the team’s weaknesses or attract a veteran – like Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones, whose brother was just added to Chicago’s locker room with this deal.
On top of that, the conditional pick is in favor of the Blackhawks: A conditional third round pick becomes a second round pick if Edmonton wins three rounds of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs and Keith is one of Edmonton’s top four defensemen in total ice time in those rounds.
(Of course, the latter condition is much more likely than the former).
Keith is one of the main reasons the Blackhawks have become a Stanley Cup winning dynasty. His number 2 will probably hang in the rafters at some point. But with Jonathan Toews back and Patrick Kane still one of the best players in the NHL, it’s time for the franchise’s other poster boy to go. That they got something tangible in return is frankly surprising given the context.
