“Wish Upon A Cure” Newton County Relay For Life

The 2018 Newton County Relay For Life event is fast approaching.  A premier fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life in Newton County brings the community together to support cancer research and hopefully eliminate cancer in the very near future.  With approximately 60 community teams involved, the Relay event will again be held at The Church At Covington on Highway 142 in Covington. Beginning with opening ceremonies at 6pm on Friday, April 27, this year’s event will close at 12 midnight as we ring in a new day and become one step closer to finding a cure for cancer.

Fairview Elementary Media Specialist Jennifer Cole Named 2018 NCSS Media Specialist of the Year

Fairview Elementary School media specialist Jennifer Cole is Newton County School System’s (NCSS) 2018 Media Specialist of the Year. The Library Media Specialist of the Year Award recognizes individual excellence in the library media field through service to students, teachers, and the community at the K-12 levels. Cole will now represent Newton County Schools in the South Metro District Library Media Specialist of the Year competition, part of the Georgia Library Media Specialist of the Year program.

The Covington/Newton County Chamber of Commerce awarded Kwik Change Lube & Service, LLC the 2017 Dick James Small Business of the Year Award. The award was presented at the annual dinner on March 6, 2018 at Charles Elliott Wildlife Center.
The Dick James Small Business of the Year Award was created to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding efforts of the small businesses located in Newton County, Georgia. Kwik Change Lube & Service, LLC was one of 12 businesses nominated for the award.

The more I learn about Newton County, the more I fall in love with this community. Today, I attended the first Newton County State of the County Address which was given by Chairman Marcello Banes. Mr. Banes is all about community and the growth of Newton County. He is committed to his people. He mentioned the new hashtag with the aim of raising morale amongst the residents. The new hashtag is #NewtonOne. The ongoing theme of the address was ‘moving with unity.’ Banes spoke about everything with the intent of moving forward in 2018 in unity.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Now Offered at Piedmont Newton

Covington, Ga. – Piedmont Newton Hospital now offers pulmonary rehabilitation services, which is a supervised program of exercise and education focusing on lung diseases. “There are so many benefits of pulmonary rehab,” Haley Flynn, supervisor of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation at Piedmont Newton, said. “Piedmont Newton’s program is designed to help patients understand their pulmonary disease through educational sessions, as well as improve their strength and endurance with exercise specifically created for each patient.”

What a great time of meeting families and making connections at the Back to School Bash at Conyers Middle School today! Parents and students were able to meet our new Superintendent Dr. Terry Oatts, new CMS Principal Dr. De'borah Reese, and Conyers Mayor Vince Evans. School supplies donated by Acuity Brands were distributed at the beginning of the event, with help from volunteers from Rockdale County High School and Rockdale Magnet School.
