A Celebration of Community, an Armadillo Race and the Mayoral Address

On the night of Wednesday, January 10th, I walked into a room full of beautifully dressed businessmen and women, government officials and their families. People were talking and laughing while drinking their beverages and enjoying the event hall of the Cherokee Run Club House. The event, A Celebration of Community was exactly that, Community. The community came out to celebrate the people who have worked hard to make Conyers a thriving city. The night began with Mayor Randy Mills saying that he had the “dubious honor for the last time to call this meeting to order.” Highlights of the night included the transition of the mayor, new council members, honoring outgoing council members and honoring the outgoing mayor.

Write the Vision, and Make it Plain!

Not too long ago I was asked to attend a Vision Board Party. Usually, toward the end and beginning of the year, you can see them popping up. Now, everyone has their own special twist, but to me, it’s all the same – cutting out magazine pictures and posting them on a poster board. I’ve done one before several years ago, and it ended up shoved under my bed collecting dust until it ended up in the trash can. As invitations come in to join the ‘best ever’ vision casting party, I usually politely decline. It’s not that I’m opposed to doing arts and crafts, but the process has never felt actionable enough for me. And, with me being a ‘so what are you going to do about it’ kind of girl, I struggle with ambiguity. But, this time was different. This invitation was extended to my family. I gave it a try and was amazed at the outcome.

Everyone Valued and Welcomed

Local Outreach, Relationships, and Community. That is the heart of what we do at AWAKE. We work towards showing love in practical ways. Being in Olde Town, we have the privilege of getting to know our community and all the different people who make it up, on a personal level. Whether it’s a judge from across the street at the courthouse or the man who lives under a nearby bridge and walks to his job daily at Goodwill, we try to make everyone feel welcomed and valued.

What a great time of meeting families and making connections at the Back to School Bash at Conyers Middle School today! Parents and students were able to meet our new Superintendent Dr. Terry Oatts, new CMS Principal Dr. De'borah Reese, and Conyers Mayor Vince Evans. School supplies donated by Acuity Brands were distributed at the beginning of the event, with help from volunteers from Rockdale County High School and Rockdale Magnet School. Many great volunteers, non-profits, and vendors represented today. CMS also held the CMS Bulldog Camp for rising 6th graders today for orientation to their new school. Here are a few scenes. ...
