The T-Wolves may have to trade away their own franchise player to pull it off, however, as Karl-Anthony Towns has stated he would waive his no-trade clause if the Timberwolves trade him to the Los Angeles Lakers.

As the deadline for a possible Ben Simmons trade approaches, the Minnesota Timberwolves are right in the middle of things. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess if Minnesota will be able to complete a deal for Simmons. Karl-Anthony Towns, on the other hand, will gain the most if they manage to pull it off.
In the NBA, Karl-Anthony Towns has become something of a forgotten hero. By his fourth NBA season, KAT had been named to two All-Star teams and was even named to an All-NBA team in his third year. He was generally regarded as one of the league’s most coveted franchise players, with sky-high potential that was tailor-made for the contemporary NBA.
Karl-Anthony Towns, on the other hand, has faded into obscurity following two difficult seasons in which he and his teammates battled with a spate of ailments. Despite having a unicorn skillset that most people could only build on NBA 2K, this is what happened.

Karl-Anthony Towns went from trying 2.7 three-pointers per game in his first three years to more than doubling that in his past three, with 5.8 attempts per game. Given that he has a lifetime three-point shooting percentage of 39.4 percent, he is one of the most lethal outside shooters in the NBA, and not only among big men.
Towns has long been regarded as one of the NBA’s most powerful offensive powers. Despite recently completing his age-25 season, he is currently disregarded as one of the league’s bright young stars due to his lack of playoff success as well as his less-than-stellar defensive performance.
For these reasons, Karl-Anthony Towns is pleading with the Timberwolves to trade for Ben Simmons.
Ben Simmons is a hesitant shooter, but he possesses the playmaking skills to see outside threats quickly. Despite his inability to make three-point shots himself, he is one of the best in the NBA at creating opportunities for his teammates. Combining him with Karl-Anthony Towns, a reliably trigger-happy target, seems like a match made in heaven.
Simmons was also runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year. His presence would be a welcome boost to a Timberwolves team that ended last season in the bottom three in defensive rating. Their dreadful 114.5 rating was worse than the Houston Rockets, who had effectively bombed the season after releasing James Harden. Instead of relying on outgunning their opponents as they did last season, having Big Ben beside KAT would balance out the defensive responsibilities.
Finally, although Karl-Anthony Towns has only played in one playoff series, Ben Simmons has been a member of a Sixers team that has qualified for the playoffs every year since his rookie season. This isn’t to suggest that Simmons is a legitimate playoff standout who will instill a winning culture in the Timberwolves. Going to Minnesota, on the other hand, gives him a fresh start with a club that has lower expectations than the one he’ll be leaving in Philadelphia.
Ben Simmons has spent his whole NBA career playing under the burden of being on a playoff team. Joining Karl-Anthony Towns in Minnesota allows him to relieve some of the pressure on a club that has three (or two, depending on the trade package they have to give up) explosive offensive threats who aren’t hesitant to let it all hang out. Ben Simmons would no longer have to shoulder the offensive burden or be the team’s lone ballhandler.
He can just play freely on a team that values his talents above his flaws, which was not the case with his partnership with Joel Embiid on the Sixers. Instead, he’ll be able to flourish playing alongside KAT.
Karl-Anthony Towns is in his eighth season with the Minnesota Timberwolves and has nothing to show for it. If the club wants to see what they have with their present franchise player, they’ll have to swing for the fences and sign the perfect star running-mate for him.
