The Lakers are well on their way to qualifying for the playoffs this season, thanks in part to a fantastic crop of superstars, including LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Anthony Davis is dealing with an aggravated Achilles injury that will definitely keep him sidelined for the next few weeks. It’s a bad sign for the Lakers, who need to keep Anthony Davis sidelined for as long as possible to become NBA champions again in 2021.

Today, the Lakers look thin on the court without a truly tall man of any length other than 36-year-old Marc Gasol. Even if Montrezl Harrell plays bigger than him, the Lakers need the big man to defend the rim and bounce back. At the same time, the Lakers need depth to relieve the pressure on Anthony Davis when he returns from injury.

Here are seven big men the Lakers could immediately sign to replace Anthony Davis.

7. Dwayne Dedmon

Free Agency

Dedmon had a good season with the Atlanta Hawks last year, playing at 23.3 MPH and averaging nearly double digits. Dedmon is the type of player who catches a lot of rebounds in a short period of time and plays hard on both ends of the court. It’s odd that he doesn’t have a job in the league right now, even though he can’t cover the floor from three.

The Lakers know what they’re getting with Deadmon: a defensive end who plays hard and stays in his lane. Dedmon is 31, so he still has fuel in the tank, and with his 6 years of championship experience, he also has the experience to help a rival like the Lakers.

6. Manufacturer of fine products

Statistics 2020-2021 : 3.8 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 0.5 APG, 0.3 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Commercial Package : Quinn Cook, Costas Antetokounmpo for Sound Maker.

Tone Maker was once a candidate with a lot of potential. Those days aren’t quite over yet, as the talent factory only exists for 24 years this month. Maker just hasn’t found a team where he can succeed, and a team like the Lakers could take him to the next level. Maker only plays 9.5 MPG though, so you’ll have to convince him if he wants to play.

Lakers won’t have to give up much to acquire Maker, as he’s a center who can create space on the floor and he also has length. The Lakers can let Maker play, who will be a very good player in the coming years, or just let him play 15-20 minutes a night to cover for Anthony Davis.

5. Nerlens No

Statistics 2020-2021 : 4.0 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 0.5 APG, 1.3 SPG, 1.4 BPG

Commercial Package : Quinn Cook, Costas Antetokounmpo for Nerlens Noel.

Noel came into the league with extraordinary size and athletic ability, though he never reached the potential expected of him. He has had a decent career so far and could be a valuable role player with his defensive skills at the rim and his rebounds.

Noel is playing just 19.0 MPG with the Knicks this season and is a replacement for Mitchell Robinson. The Lakers can use Noel’s frame from 6 to 11 inches around the basket, and even if he loses about 20 MPH, he can be effective as a great backup to Anthony Davis and Marc Gasol.

4. Mo Bamba

Statistics 2020-2021 : 4.8 PPG, 3.8 PPG, 0.3 PPG, 0.2 PPG, 0.8 BPG

Commercial Package : Quinn Cook, Costas Antetokounmpo for Mo Bamba.

Bamba is a young, active midfielder with a lot of growth ahead of him, who can defend and rebound well. Bamba is playing just 8.7 MPG this season because he didn’t rotate with the Orlando Magic. That’s a lot different than the 16.3 MPH he averaged during his first season. The Lakers could have Bamba playing in good health under the guidance of some great experienced players, including Marc Gasol, to improve their game.

Bamba doesn’t come to mix teams, but he will play significant minutes to cover Anthony Davis and do the dirty work. Bamba can still get better and the Lakers should let the 22-year-old play this season.

3. Hassan Whiteside

Statistics 2020-2021 : 8.4 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 0.5 APG, 0.3 SPG, 1.4 BPG

Commercial Package : Quinn Cook, Costas Antetokounmpo for Hassan Whiteside.

Whiteside is another veteran who has long been a shot stopper and rebounder. Despite his inconsistencies, Whiteside can hit back, defend himself and finish on the edge. When playing with LeBron, Whiteside can score easily offensively, while his height and length allow him to take on the defense.

Whiteside cannot be counted on to replace Marc Gasol in the starting line-up, but he is still a useful player at this stage of his career. Whiteside is playing just 14.8 MPG for the Kings this season, and he’s probably not untouchable, far from it. The Lakers could make a good deal and add a two-time champion blocker to the list.

2. Blake Griffin

Statistics 2020-2021 : 12.3 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 3.9 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Purchase

Definitely the worst season of his career, Blake Griffin was a shell of his former self. He doesn’t seem happy in Detroit, and the Pistons have practically abandoned him. While Griffin will likely never become an All-Star at this rate, he gets better with each rank he takes thanks to his versatile offensive skills.

Griffin is making too much money for the Lakers to trade him, but if the Pistons buy him out, he could replace Davis in the bases right away and eventually take back his 20 PPG uniform. Griffin is not expected to be the savior of the Lakers this season, but if he comes close to 80% of his best performance, the Lakers will win over the West.

1. Andre Drummond

Statistics 2020-2021 : £17.5, £13.5, £2.6, £1.6, £1.2.

Purchase

Andre Drummond looked like an All-Star at times with the Cleveland Cavaliers and ranks 2nd in the NBA in rebounding. Drummond is athletic, long and plays defense as his stats show. It is currently the most popular raw material in the market.

Like Blake Griffin, Drummond makes the most money and is shut down by his team until he is traded or bought out. The Lakers can’t trade Drummond, but if he is bought out, the acquisition of a two-time All-Star would put the Lakers on the same level as the Nets in terms of talent. Drummond can replace Gasol on the team and will be an excellent partner alongside Anthony Davis when he returns.
