State of the Pac

The Pac-12 Conference has announced that it will be the first collegiate athletic conference to implement a blockchain-powered ticketing system.

The pac-12 is the conference that has been around for over 100 years. It is one of the oldest conferences in college football.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Stanford-Oregon football game was a significant sports event about a decade ago, when it was at its peak. It wasn’t just a big deal on the West Coast; it was one of the most important games in college football.

Under Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw, Stanford had somehow transformed into a bully, while Chip Kelly reinvented offensive football at Oregon, fielding some of the most dynamic teams the sport had ever seen. Each edition had national championship implications from 2010 to 2014. There were many Heisman Trophy contenders and several future NFL players in the game, which was usually played in November, and the game-day atmospheres mirrored those stakes.

The Cardinals and Ducks were revered throughout the country. They demonstrated what the league is capable of, and while USC battled severe penalties, it wasn’t unreasonable to imagine an even better future after the Trojans emerged victorious.

Of course, that future has yet to materialize, with Stanford’s 31-24 overtime victory against then-No. 3 Oregon on Saturday serving as the latest depressing reminder of the Pac-12’s dire situation. The game, which was supposed to be a national advertising for the conference, had the opposite effect, exposing the Ducks as overrated and showcasing a stadium atmosphere more appropriate for a meaningless FCS game.

Oregon isn’t totally out of the College Football Playoff picture after one defeat, but nothing about the way it’s been playing the last two weeks suggests it’ll be able to run the table. The Ducks’ victory against Ohio State on Sept. 11 raised expectations, and although the defeat to Stanford was disappointing, it should be emphasized that the program is still on an outstanding upward trend.

However, there isn’t much else to be hopeful about during the conference.

Arizona State, which was defeated by BYU, may be a strong team. The Sun Devils defeated UCLA 42-23 on Saturday, establishing themselves as the Pac-12 South favorite. However, with the looming threat of an NCAA investigation into potential recruitment and COVID-19 procedure breaches, there’s a chance it may all come tumbling down.

It’s a great tale about Oregon State. The Beavers’ gradual improvement under coach Jonathan Smith is finally paying off with victories, but their modest early-season success isn’t enough to get national attention, and they lost their season opener to an ordinary Big Ten club in Purdue.

There are nine more teams left, all of whom have been disappointed to different degrees and are on the wrong track.

Washington is in a state of chaos. Washington began the season with a defeat to FCS opponent Montana and just recently fell to Oregon State for the first game since 2011. Rival Washington State’s season has been characterized by on-field deterioration, while coach Nick Rolovich’s reluctance to be vaccinated for COVID-19 has been a major off-field concern so far.

Cal is leading the race to the basement of the Pac-12 North after a 21-6 defeat to Wazzu. The Bears are underdogs in each of their remaining divisional games, according to ESPN’s Power Football Index, and, like their opponent across the Bay, are failing to gain traction in a congested pro-sports-heavy market.

UCLA had its time in the spotlight with a historic victory over LSU on Sept. 4, but the Bruins soon squandered their advantages with losses to Fresno State and Arizona State, giving up more than 40 points in both games.

Surprisingly, USC seems to be in the greatest condition, but that has everything to do with coach Clay Helton’s departure and the belief that a new coach would be able to restore USC’s status as a national force.

It’s been strange to see Utah’s lack of discipline and tenacity, as well as their terrible special teams performance. It defies all expectations for a Kyle Whittingham-coached squad and has left the Utes (2-2) without a sense of identity.

Colorado (1-4), which has yet to defeat an FBS opponent, has declined the most from its 2020 form. The Buffaloes were a surprise 4-2 during the shortened pandemic season, but have since had one of college football’s worst offenses. They are second to worst in FBS with 1,198 yards of total offense after five games, behind only UL Monroe.

Arizona (0-4), which has lost 16 games in a row going back to 2019, is barely worthy of consideration.

The Pac-12 is in a precarious position as a result of the cumulative deterioration. With two months of regular-season football remaining, conference indifference is only expected to grow.
