New Patriot #1 Receiver
NESN’s Doug Kyed was the first to identify Smith-Schuster as an intriguing option in the free agent market for the Patriots. Caid wrote:
Smith-Schuster, 24 years old, is the most interesting player in this group. With the Steelers who already have Deonta Johnson, Chase Claypool and James Washington in their ranks, there’s really no reason to spend a lot of free agency money on Smith-Schuster. His best season came in 2018 when he caught 111 passes for 1,426 yards with seven touchdowns. It is significantly better than the second level options on this list, but can make a relatively good deal compared to some other first level smugglers.
Miguel Bezan, Patriots cap expert, approved the concept on Twitter:
Just because he’s the youngest (he turned 24 last month) doesn’t mean I voted for JuJu. https://t.co/McEajbb4Oc

Make no mistake, if the Patriots recruit Smith-Schuster on the free market, he will be the team’s best option in the 2021 passing game. This would also have been the case if the team had recruited a wide receiver in the first round. Adding a No. 1 receiver to the current mix would do wonders for the Patriots’ air raid.
As Troy Aikman, a member of the Hall of Famer, said during Thursday night’s broadcast of the Patriots’ 24-3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, each of the team’s receivers is playing a little further than they should. The only exception to this concept is N’Keel Harry.
He was selected 32nd in the NFL Draft 2019. Choice of position, so you can expect it to be a solid No. 1 or an excellent No. 2. However, it has been slow to get going, although it has shown some signs in the last two weeks.
In fact Smith-Schuster went for first place, while Harry and Jacoby Meyers fought for second place. Damier Bird could operate from the lunge, with Gunner Olszewski as the fourth man. Julian Edelman has been fighting injuries all season, and I would be shocked if he made the 2021 team.
The coaching staff of guys like Isaiah Zuber and Christian Wilkerson are interesting opportunities, but not enough to count on next season. The Patriots must therefore add a proven and legitimate recipient.
Smith-Schuster predictive effect
According to Spotrac, Smith-Schuster expects to earn $15 million a season from his new contract. Given his production so far, 111 receptions for 1,426 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2018, and he’s only 24 years old, he seems like a perfect choice.
Who knows how much money the patriots are willing to spend for a player in a position of skill? A look at their one-dimensional attack in 2020 and New England will have to step up to the plate to add talented players to the receiving end.
