TEMPLETON – The 2. In January, Templeton’s recreation division officially ended its 2020 race, a $5,000 virtual fundraiser, and estimates it will raise between five and seven thousand dollars.
The Templeton Recreation Department holds an annual 5K fundraiser called Jingle All The Way 5K, but decided on a new theme last year when they were forced to move the event virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The name of the race was Run from 2020 because, frankly, we’ve been through a lot and I’m sure all readers can see that, said Recreation Manager Melissa Johnson. We usually do our 5K All The Way Jingle in person, and since we obviously couldn’t do it and had to do it virtually, we figured we might as well make a joke.
Participation in the virtual 5K run cost $30 and came with a bag full of themed items like hand sanitizer, a T-shirt with a COVID cartoon image chasing a runner, and of course toilet paper. Johnson also decided to add a second t-shirt from past fundraisers this year to remind runners of the good old days.
Templeton’s Recreation Department posted registration online in hopes that local runners would participate, but in the end there were registrations hundreds of miles away.
People from Idaho, Alabama, Clovis, people who have no idea where Templeton, California, is, have never heard of it and just wanted to get involved, Johnson said. I guess they ran out of toilet paper because it’s in our garbage bags.
About 60 people worked on the project between the 19th and 20th. December 2020 and 2. January 2021 participated in the virtual fundraiser.
Templeton’s recreation department is in the midst of its new baseball conditioning program, which starts on Jan. 11 and lasts four weeks.
They do well, we have a hundred kids playing burnt-out cops, Johnson said. Softball and baseball lend themselves very well to social distancing and it was a lot of fun for the coaches and the kids to get out on the field. Baseball is also a program we cancelled the day before it opened last spring, in March 2020.
Statute of limitations. Starting in February, the department will move on to new sports. Tennis lessons at Templeton Tennis Ranch begin on the 1st. February, and flag football and conditioning classes are scheduled for the 22nd. Early February.
We want to add a few different elements, like the archery program and the track and field program, Johnson said. The ball is in our court, that’s what we do, and we have those programs, but we also want to find a way to integrate some of those other programs.
