The Community Shield is the oldest football fixture in English football, dating back to the first season of the Football League in 1888. It was originally contested between the winners of the previous season’s First Division and FA Cup winners, but now replaces the Super Cup as the final match of the season.
Leicester City are champions of England. They are the first team in over a decade to win the English Premier League without playing in the Champions League. They are the first team from outside the top six in nearly a quarter century to win the league. They are the first team in almost three decades to win the league without a single shot on goal. For most of the week, they were a mystery. They were the only team without a shot on goal. They had one shot on goal. And they scored it.
It’s been a long time coming for Manchester City, but after last night’s Community Shield victory over Leicester City, they’ve finally secured the Premier League title for the first time.. Read more about kelechi and let us know what you think.
Leicester City is a football club based in Leicester shocked Manchester City by winning the Community Shield at Wembley thanks to a late penalty from substitute Kelechi Iheanacho.
The match between last season’s Premier League champions and FA Cup winners was tense at times and seemed to be headed for penalties until Iheanacho scored from the spot after being tripped by Nathan Ake with a minute left.
On 65 minutes, City’s record £100 million acquisition Jack Grealish made his debut, although he failed to create a clear-cut chance for a much-changed squad.
Kasper Schmeichel brilliantly turned an arrowed free-kick over the crossbar for Ilkay Gundogan, and the German midfielder also blasted over a first-time attempt from 10 yards out.
For Leicester, striker Jamie Vardy was impressive, but he couldn’t get past City goalkeeper Zack Steffen, who produced a spectacular reaction save to deny the Englishman.
Leicester now has even more silverware.
Leicester fans have seen five years of football that would have beyond their wildest expectations: shock Premier League champions in 2016, surprise FA Cup winners last season, and now winning the Community Shield to kick off the new season in style.
Despite playing in the Champions League after winning the league, they have dropped out of the top four in consecutive seasons after looking strong for most of the season.
But they left it late in London to send Manchester City home unhappy, as Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho scored the winner 11 minutes after coming on against his former team.
Until that moment, the curtain-raiser for the new Premier League season, which kicks off on Friday when Arsenal hosts newly promoted Brentford, had been a fairly equal affair.
Leicester had injury issues in defence, so free agent Ryan Bertrand started, while fellow summer signings Patson Daka and Boubakary Soumare came off the bench in the second half.
Vardy seemed the most likely to break the stalemate, but he showed some rustiness with his finishing, hitting a 12-yard bounce shot straight at Steffens before the American kept out a shot with his following right foot while diving to the left.
Harvey Barnes’ return to competitive action after a knee injury kept him out since February will be a big boost for Rodgers, as the Englishman displayed some lovely touches down the left side.
Wilfred Ndidi was at his best, winning the ball back eight times, making five tackles, and assisting on three interceptions, all positive indications for Leicester ahead of their Premier League start against Wolves at home next Saturday.
The much-changed city falls short.
After signing Manchester City for a British record £100 million from Aston Villa, Jack Grealish made his debut from the bench.
Pep Guardiola had said before the game that he had little time to prepare for the new season since “half of the squad” was missing.
Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden were the greatest losses, both suffering injuries during the summer’s European Championship. Raheem Sterling was also left out, allowing untested youngsters Cole Palmer, 19, and Sam Edozie, 18, to start.
Edozie, who had scored in all three pre-season friendlies, was given with a great chance in the first half when he was set up by Gundogan’s through pass, but he shot wide in front of the Leicester end.
And in the second half, Edozie’s darting move produced a foul on the outside of the box, but Riyad Mahrez curled the resultant free-kick over the bar.
When the Algerian broke free from the halfway line, he struck over, much to the delight of the Leicester fans who had been jeering him throughout the game.
Grealish, the star attraction, had a 25-minute run but struggled to make an impact, especially with City without a central striker.
Sergio Aguero, the club’s all-time leading scorer, departed in the summer, and it’s unclear if a deal for Tottenham striker Harry Kane would be completed.
If the transfer process picks up and City and Spurs can reach an agreement next week, Kane could make his City debut the following Saturday… against his former team
‘It was a really unique experience.’
“There was a fantastic feeling coming here today,” Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers told Radio Leicester. “Every Leicester player, supporter, and staff member coming here, it was a very unique experience.”
“We wanted to carry it into the game and maintain that vibe, and fortunately we were able to do so.”
“Congratulations to Leicester,” Pep Guardiola said. “I am more than pleased with how we played; many things were very fantastic, and the young players were outstanding.”
“We got minutes for guys, so there were a lot of positives.”
The figures are correct, Iheanacho.
- Leicester have won their first game against Manchester City outside of league play since a 4-3 FA Cup triumph in February 1968, after being winless in their previous 12 such meetings.
- With the exception of Manchester City’s 2-0 victory against Chelsea in 2018, the FA Cup winners have won the Community Shield in six of the last seven seasons.
- Manchester City have lost three of their last four games at Wembley Stadium, which is the same number of losses as they had in their previous 15 appearances there (W9, D3).
- Leicester City have now won three straight games at Wembley Stadium without conceding a goal, after losing three in a row there before.
- Manchester City have lost four of their last six games in all competitions (W2), equaling the number of losses they had in their previous 53 games (W43, D6, L4).
- Kelechi Iheanacho of Leicester became the first player since Gary McAllister of Liverpool against Manchester United in 2001 to score a penalty in a Community Shield final (excluding shootouts).
- Iheanacho scored his first goal against Manchester City in his ninth appearance in all competitions against his old club, with his sixth shot attempt against the Citizens.
- Samuel Edozie (18y 191d) and Ben Knight (19y 54d) were Pep Guardiola’s 17th and 18th youngsters to make their Manchester City debuts.
What comes next?
Leicester will kick off their Premier League season against Wolves at home on Saturday (15:00 BST), while Manchester City will travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (16:30).
