West Bromwich Albion looked like they had a point to prove after dropping to third in the Championship table last weekend when they beat Sheffield United 4-0 at The Hawthorns to go top of the table.
It was a victory that had been awaited for some time, and the Baggies finally got their chance to stretch their lead at the top of the Championship courtesy of a comfortable win over Sheffield United on Saturday. The Baggies were 3-0 up inside thirty minutes, and with the Blades failing to mount a response, it is now just three points between Simon Cox and the leaders on goal difference. The Blades have a game in hand, and it is not inconceivable that they could still finish in the top two if they win both their remaining fixtures while the Baggies lose only one of their three.
West Bromwich Albion are now top of the Championship, as they beat Sheffield United 4-0 at the Hawthorns. The Baggies, who have taken 16 points from their last eight games, started the second half strongly, and after only four minutes they took the lead when James McClean finished a slick move. The lead was doubled just before the hour mark, when James Morrison latched on to a Gilio Cervi cross and then finished at the near post. Jonathan Greening pulled one back for Albion in the 72nd minute, but McClean restored their two-goal advantage and they held on to go top of the table.. Albion’s first goal was nearly identical to the one they scored against Luton on Saturday.
The Hawthorns saw West Bromwich Albion become top of the Championship standings after a thrashing of Sheffield United.
Albion’s physical superiority in a match between two of last season’s relegated Premier League clubs demonstrated that they had adjusted well to life back at this level under new manager Valerien Ismael.
Three of Albion’s four goals were from aerial set pieces, which were sparked by a headed opening own goal from a Darnell Furlong long throw, exactly as they were against Luton on Saturday.
After Jack Robinson’s header was saved by Michael Verrips, the Dutch goalkeeper’s mistake allowed Dara O’Shea to score early in the second half, before summer signing Alex Mowatt added a third six minutes later.
On 59 minutes, another Furlong throw resulted to Callum Robinson’s third goal in four games, putting the Baggies ahead of Fulham on goal difference.
Sheffield United, on the other hand, is yet to score in the league this season and has just one point from Saturday’s goalless draw with Swansea.
Verrips made his first league start for the Blades after being signed to replace England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who is set to join Arsenal.
From the time Robinson met Furlong’s throw off balance and created an almost exact replica of Luton captain Kal Naismith’s own goal at the weekend, it turned into a baptism of fire – and an evening to forget.
Albion went 3-0 ahead on Saturday, then almost let it slip away, but they were not to be outdone this time, scoring three times in 12 second-half minutes.
Verrips got a hand to Mowatt’s right-wing corner, but fumbled under intense pressure from Matt Clarke, and defender O’Shea kept his cool to slam home his second goal in three games.
Mowatt then started and completed the third strike motion. He won the ball in the air, found Robinson, and dashed into the box for Karlan Grant’s back pass, which he calmly sidefooted past Verrips.
Just before the hour, Robinson completed the score after Verrips’ effort to reach another Furlong throw was stopped, and Kyle Bartley’s flick-on left the Albion striker in space to finish from close range.
Valerien Ismael, West Bromwich Albion’s head coach, said Radio WM:
“There are so many things to be thankful for. We were strong, focused, disciplined, and maintained a spotless record.
“We maintained our intensity for the whole 90 minutes.” And we offered the supporters that pleasure to help us create the right environment.
“We want them to assist make it difficult for visiting teams to get here.”
Slavisa Jokanovic, the manager of Sheffield United, told Radio Sheffield:
“They were victorious in the physical fight. We’ll have a difficulty winning the second ball if we don’t win the first.
“We had a good idea of how they’d play, but we didn’t respond.”
“We paid a high price, and I was dissatisfied with how we handled the ball.”
