3 best signings of the summer transfer window

This summer, Atlanta United fans were treated to a flurry of moves from their MLS rivals. But how does their moves stack up against the best moves of the summer transfer window? To find out, we look at the best three transfers from each side, and then grade them against each other.

According to the mantra of Football Manager, “Signing three players in mid-season is more powerful than signing one in the summer.” That’s because some players are better than others. And some are better than others in the summer.  Here are three of the best signings of the summer transfer window.

Would you believe that the summer transfer window opened on July 1st? I know, right? The transfer window opens on the last Wednesday in July each year, and closes on August 31st, except for the first window of the season, which opens on July 21st. This year, it’s been London-based “Bournemouth” that has been the surprise to everyone, signing their Championship winning captain “Steve Cook”, “Nathan Ake”, former Barcelona star “Luis Suarez”, and former Spurs man “Toby Alderweireld” all in the past few weeks. This leaves Tottenham to be the big winners of the summer transfer window, by signing England’s youngest player “Luke Shaw”, and the highly rated “Sead. After an eventful summer in Germany, the 2021/22 Bundesliga season is already underway. Bayern Munich, the reigning champions, seem to be on track to win another championship after adding Leipzig pair Dayot Upamecano and Marcel Sabitzer to their roster. Dortmund, however, was able to retain Erling Haaland while acquiring Donyell Malen, a potential young prospect from PSV Eindhoven, to compensate for the loss of Jadon Sancho to Manchester United. Finally, Andre Silva joined Leipzig after a fantastic Bundesliga season in which he set a new career high in goals.

As a result, these are the finest three signings in Germany’s top flight during the summer transfer season.

Bayern Munich’s Marcel Sabitzer

Sabitzer seemed to be destined to remain at RB Leipzig until Bayern rushed in and snatched him up at the conclusion of the transfer window. Sabitzer signed a four-year contract with the Bundesliga champions for €16 million. After formerly leading Leipzig, Julian Nagelsmann took over in Munich this season, and he obviously had a key role in bringing his former player to the Allianz Arena.

Sabitzer provides Bayern with much-needed depth in the center of the field. Right now, their first-choice combination is Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich, but there aren’t many alternatives beyond the two Germans. Corentin Tolisso is in the running, although he’s had a string of ailments in recent years.

Sabitzer will likely fill in for Nagelsmann and fight for playing time. He’s a genuine box-to-box midfielder, although the Austrian has somewhat more offensive flair than Kimmich for the Bundesliga giants. Sabitzer scores every 186 minutes on average and brings a lot of creativity to the team. Sabitzer, who is capable of playing out wide on the right wing if necessary, is unlikely to do so if Jamal Musiala’s rise continues.

Regardless, this is a significant signing for Bayern. Sabitzer scored eight goals and added three assists for Leipzig in 2020/21, and he’s flexible enough to help Nagelsmann in a number of ways. Competition for playing time will be tough, but Sabitzer has more than enough talent to be a major component of his old coach’s plans this season as they attempt to win their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title.

RB Leipzig’s Andre Silva

Sabitzer doesn’t play up front, but he was a key part of Leipzig’s assault. Jesse Marsch’s team gained a clinical figure in the final third with the arrival of Andre Silva in July, who is coming off his finest season of his career. In 2020/21, the Portuguese international was on fire, scoring 28 goals in 32 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt, ranking second only to Robert Lewandowski in the Golden Boot competition. He was a big reason why the Eagles were just one point away from a Champions League berth. He scored 45 goals in 71 competitive appearances for the club, demonstrating his deadly ability. While Silva’s departure will be disappointing for Frankfurt, he has already shown his value to Leipzig.

So far, the former AC Milan striker has a goal and an assist in three games. He’s a natural No. 9 who thrives on finding the back of the net. Because of his constant feeling of being in hazardous situations, he scored the bulk of his goals inside the 18-yard box last season. Silva has exceptional speed and is a true complete striker who can score with both feet and his head, as shown by the goals he scored in 2020/21.

In today’s world, attackers must be more than simply finishes, and Silva fits the criteria well. He’s also excellent at picking out passes and providing assists, having tallied five with the Eagles. Silva’s flexibility in the final third is already showing with Leipzig, who will be vying for the Bundesliga championship alongside Bayern. Leipzig has a terrific player in Andre Silva, who is in top form.

Dortmund’s Donyell Malen

Despite the fact that the Eredivisie and Bundesliga have significant differences, Malen was one of the top players in the Netherlands last season. This resulted in a high-profile transfer to Borussia Dortmund, where he signed a four-year deal. Malen was unstoppable for PSV Eindhoven last season, scoring 19 goals and adding eight assists. He scored 27 goals in all competitions. His excellent form continued at Euro 2020, when he scored two goals for the Netherlands.

Malen was PSV’s primary player up top, but he’ll be playing on the left for Dortmund. Sancho’s move to Old Trafford offers the Bundesliga giants another offensive danger, and the 22-year-old is delighted to provide assists for Haaland. Malen is a technically talented player who, due to his speed, can make dangerous runs in behind opponents. It’s even conceivable that Rose would pair Malen with Haaland as a striker, which would give Dortmund’s attack a new dynamic due to their distinct skill sets.

Malen has yet to score or assist in the Bundesliga, and to be honest, acclimating to a new league that is superior than the Eredivisie may take a season. But, in the long term, Donyell Malen should establish himself as a key member of Dortmund’s team as the club seeks to reclaim Bundesliga supremacy.
