“We have to admit that he has let us down,” she told Politico magazine in an interview published Friday. “He went down a road he shouldn’t have taken, and we shouldn’t have followed him and listened to him. And we can’t let that happen again.
Haley has often tried to walk a fine line, distancing herself from Trump, who remains popular within the party, enough to please her Republican and moderate critics. In particular, she left her administration in 2018 on good terms with Trump, unlike many other officials who publicly feuded with their former bosses.
In a January 6 Politico article, Haley expressed her anger at Trump’s treatment of former Vice President Mike Pence, saying she had not spoken to Trump since. On that day, Trump attacked Pence on Twitter for doing his duty as chairman of the Congressional Electoral College, when a crowd of supporters stormed Capitol Hill in hopes of stopping the accreditation, some of whom scanned death threats against Pence.
“To tell you I’m angry is an understatement,” Haley told Politico. “Mike has been nothing but loyal to this man. He has been nothing but a good friend to this man…. I’m so disappointed that [despite] the loyalty and friendship he had with Mike Pence, he did this to him. Like, I’m disgusted by it.
However, she believes that “an impeachment is a waste of time.” A majority of Republican senators have indicated they will vote to impeach Trump, and impeachment requires a two-thirds majority in the House.
Asked how Trump should be held accountable, Haley replied, “I think he will become more and more isolated.”
“I think his business is suffering now. I think he’s lost some political viability. I think he’s lost the social media that used to mean the world to him,” she continued. “I mean, I think he’s lost things that could really move him forward.”
The Senate could also consider banning Mr. Trump from holding public office, which would prevent him from running for re-election in 2024. However, Haley predicted that Trump will not run again in federal elections and that the former president has no future in the Republican Party.
“I don’t think he’ll be in the picture,” she says. “I don’t think he can. He’s fallen so low.”
She acknowledged that Republicans’ “love” for Trump is “still very strong” and “will not be missed.”
She continued, “I also don’t think the Republican Party will go back to what it was before Donald Trump. I don’t think it should. I think we should take the good that it has built, leave behind the bad that it has done, and go back to where we can be a good, useful, effective party.”
Although Haley left the Trump administration on good terms with Trump, she sometimes commented on his rhetoric and even supported many of his policies. Days after the January 6 riots on Capitol Hill, Haley told members of the Republican National Committee in a speech behind closed doors that the president’s actions after the election “will be judged harshly by history.”
In a Politico article published Friday, Haley said in January that she was “deeply concerned” about what happened to Trump after the election, arguing that “the person I worked with was not the person I looked to after the election.”
“I never thought he would be so upset…. . I feel like I don’t know who he is anymore,” she said.
But Mr. Trump made misleading and false statements about absentee voting at the beginning of and throughout the 2020 campaign, when states decided to expand access to absentee and voting bans because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Politico reported that Haley called Trump in December after the election defeat, but did not try to tell him that the election was not rigged, as he falsely claimed.
“I understand the president. I understand that deep down he sincerely believes he’s been cheated,” Haley told the magazine.
Asked if she thought it was dangerous for Trump to spread misinformation about the election, Haley replied, “He believes it,” and compared it to : “It would be like saying the grass is blue and you genuinely believe it.” Is it irresponsible of you to be colorblind and truly believe it?
