Biden calls new Georgia voting law ‘Jim Crow in the 21st Century’

Recount after recount and trial after trial confirm the integrity and results of a clearly free, fair and secure Democratic process, Biden said in a statement released by the White House, referring to the 2020 election, when he became the first Democratic presidential candidate in nearly three decades to win the state.

Georgia is the first electoral measure to impose new voting restrictions since Biden won the state, but the law signed Thursday night by Republican Governor Brian Kemp is part of a national Republican effort to limit access to the ballot box after the 2020 election saw record turnout.

It’s Jim Crow in the 21st century. The century. This must stop, Biden said in a statement, noting that the restrictions disproportionately target black voters.

Georgia’s new law places new requirements on voter IDs in absentia, restricts the use of ballot boxes, makes approaching voters in line for food and water a felony, and gives state officials more power over local elections.

Instead of celebrating voting rights for all Georgians or winning campaigns on the merits of their ideas, Republicans in the state instead launched an anti-American bill to strip people of their right to vote. Biden said the bill, like many others being pursued by Republicans in statehouses across the country, is a blatant attack on the Constitution and good conscience.

Shortly after the statement was released, the president told reporters outside the White House that Georgia’s law was an atrocity.

If you need an indication that this has nothing to do with fairness, nothing to do with decency – they passed a law that says you can’t give people in line water while they’re waiting to vote, Biden said before boarding Marine One.

Voting rights advocates say a recently signed law in Georgia underscores the need for federal legislation setting a national standard for voting rules.

Biden ended his statement by saying he would make his case to the American people – including Republicans who joined the broadest coalition of voters ever in this election to put country over party.

If you have better ideas, you have nothing to hide. Let the people vote, Biden said.

Georgia has become an important state politically. In addition to Biden’s victory, two Democrats won a second round earlier this year to take control of the U.S. Senate.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki spoke out against the law during a briefing Friday, saying it should be easier to vote, not harder. We must not impose restrictions.

State Representative Park Cannon was arrested and escorted out of the Georgia State Capitol Thursday after the bill passed. In a video posted on social media, Ms Cannon can be seen being handcuffed by several officers and led away in the back.

Ms Psaki said on Friday: I think anyone who has seen the video is deeply shocked by the actions of the law enforcement officers who arrested her when, based on the video footage provided, she was simply knocking on the door to see if she could see the signed law.

At his first White House news conference Thursday, Biden said he would do everything in his power to stop attempts to restrict voting rights, calling Republican efforts in state legislatures un-American.
