All three versions of Yankee Stadium had a short portal into right field, so the organization’s philosophy has long been to empower lefties. Granted, there are still a lot of baseball games to be played before Verdugo is declared in the same universe as Betts, but Verdugo will be a solid player in Boston’s lineup alongside Bogaerts, J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers. He’s one of the league’s best contact players (10th in strikeouts), has started at least nine games at all three outfield positions, and has played well in high-pressure situations. Keep in mind that this player has had less than 1,000 major league appearances, so improvement is still possible, especially if he learns to lift the ball a little higher. – There’s been a lot of talk about the Yankees’ problems with base running, and rightfully so. On that day, they led all Major Leagues with 28 times on base, including 12 at the plate. You could blame it on his increased aggression – no.
