The day softball star Jayden Fields moved into a room on campus, her older brother Justin moved out of his room on the University of Georgia campus. It was a bittersweet day, her father, Pablo Fields, said of that December 3 moment. January 2019. There were both high and low scores. I brought a truckload of stuff to fill her room, and her mom decorated her room and hung lights on the wall. I took the same truck across the parking lot and put Justin’s stuff in it. The entire Fields family, including Pablo’s wife, JoAnn, and youngest daughter, Jessica, made the 589-mile journey to Columbus, Ohio. After spending the night in Knoxville, Tennessee, they arrived in Ohio the next day. JoAnn Fields dreamed of her two older children going to the same college. For a while it looked like it. She’d loved Georgia since fourth grade, maybe even more than she loved him. He was recruited within four or five months, and she developed a relationship with him over the years. For her, there was no hesitation. Growing up, the siblings were exceptionally close and competitive. Jaden said as she rushed to take her brother home from the bus stop, running up the stairs. They competed to see who finished eating first. She was happy to go to the same college as Justin, but supported his decision to drop out. After taking a break in 2019, Jayden was used primarily as a pinch-hitter in 16 games last year before the COVID-19 pandemic put an end to spring training.
