COVID-19 vaccination third doses for critically immunocompromised patients
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — On Tuesday, Aug. 17, the County of San Luis Obispo (SLO) Public Health Department announced that two SLO County individuals, one in his twenties and the other in their nineties, had died. Both fatalities are thought to be linked to COVID.
Currently, twenty-four residents, including eight in the ICU, are in the hospital with COVID-19-related symptoms.
In the last week, 778 new instances of COVID-19 have been verified in San Luis Obispo County, according to the county.

According to Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer, the county has not addressed the current “Gold Standard” PCR testing since the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced on Dec. 31 that they will withdraw their request to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of the CDC 2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Real-Time RT-PCR Diag
The PCR test, which has only been used in San Luis Obispo County and nationwide, is incorrect, according to the CDC, and may result in erroneous findings. As a result, they recommend that labs explore using a multiplexed approach to help identify and differentiate SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses.
Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer, stated, “These losses are heartbreaking for everyone concerned, particularly when we lose a member of our community at such a young age.” “I send my deepest condolences to their loved ones, family, and friends. I urge all people of our community, whatever of age, to get the vaccination. We have the ability to stop these tragedies.”
Dr. Borenstein did not say what may have caused the disease in the two people who died recently when he released this information to the public (21 and 90 years old). Whether they had any other contributory variables, such as comorbidities, were immune-compromised, or had any other diseases that the community should be informed of so that they might be protected. It was also not stated whether or not they had been immunized.
All of the cases sequenced in the last week, according to Borenstein, were of the highly infectious Delta variety. This result is consistent with statewide statistics indicating that Delta strains accounted for more than 90% of all strains detected in July. Officials claim that since the Delta variety spreads more readily, more individuals get sick.
According to reports, identifying the Delta variation or other variants requires a specific kind of testing known as genomic sequencing. However, owing to the large number of COVID-19 cases, not all viral samples are sequenced.
However, since the Delta variation currently accounts for the vast majority of COVID-19 infections in the United States, a positive test result almost certainly means infection with the Delta version.
Third doses of COVID-19 vaccine will be available soon for those with severely compromised immune systems.
Following the CDC’s recent recommendation that third doses of the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines be given to individuals with certain specified illnesses that weaken the immune system, the Public Health Department will begin providing third-dose appointments at its clinics on Monday, Aug. 23.
“This is an essential step to safeguard people who are most vulnerable to COVID-19,” stated County Health Officer Dr. Penny Borenstein.
People with weakened immune systems may have a harder time responding to vaccinations, particularly the COVID-19 vaccine. According to new research, the third dosage of the mRNA vaccine improves this group’s vaccination efficacy. The necessity for this third dosage is not owing to the two-dose regimen’s diminishing efficacy; rather, the conventional two-dose regimen does not provide the same level of protection in immunocompromised persons as it does in healthy people.
Third doses are recommended by the CDC for people who have:
- Been through aggressive cancer therapy for tumors or blood malignancies.
- I had an organ transplant and am now on immunosuppressive medication.
- Have had a stem cell transplant within the past two years or are on anti-immune medication.
- Primary immunodeficiency may be mild, moderate, or severe (such as DiGeorge syndrome or Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome).
- HIV infection that is advanced or untreated.
- Treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other medicines that suppress the immune system.
Appointments will be available at Public Health facilities in San Luis Obispo, Grover Beach, and Paso Robles by Monday, August 23. Individuals will self-attest to their particular ailment, and no doctor’s note will be required. For individuals who do not satisfy CDC requirements, third doses will not be given at mobile clinics and will not be advised or accessible at Public Health clinics.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Director and State Public Health Officer, Dr. Tomás J. Aragón, issued a statement on Tuesday in response to the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup’s recommendation to support an additional COVID-19 vaccine dose for people with compromised immune systems.
“As the number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in California continues to rise, it is essential that we take steps to safeguard immunocompromised individuals who are most susceptible to severe disease,” said Dr. Aragón.
“Following the FDA’s determination that a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine is beneficial for immunocompromised people, the California Department of Public Health and our Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup conducted an additional review and recommend that providers boost immunity for this population to ensure extra protection from COVID-19. Those who are not in this group and have been completely vaccinated remain immune to the virus and do not need further COVID-19 vaccination at this time.”
