He is the first driver to win a Formula One World Championship title for two different teams, and he was the first driver to win a race in the Indianapolis 500. He has also won races in NASCAR, Indycar, CART, and Champcars. He has the most wins in one-off races of any driver, having won five times at the Indianapolis 500 and four times at the Daytona 500. He is one of only three drivers to have won the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 in the same year, doing so in 2001. He is also the only non-American to have won the 24 Hours of Daytona.
The March/April issue of Motorsport Magazine USA announced the class of 2022 for the Sports Car Racing Hall of Fame of America. The class includes six individuals, including Helio Castroneves, who are nominated by the SCCA-AAMA Sports Car Club of America, which oversees the Hall of Fame. Castroneves, a four-time Indianapolis 500 winner, is one of the most accomplished drivers in the history of motorsports.

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIA — Helio Castroneves set a new record by winning the Indianapolis 500 for the fourth time in May.
The money is still coming in.
Track officials honored the beloved 46-year-old Brazilian racer with a bronze brick when he returned to Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Thursday, and he was designated the headliner of the nine-member Motorsports Hall of Fame of America induction class for 2022 on Friday.
Castroneves said, “The motivation has always been there.” “It has nothing to do with the title. I never gave up hope. If I didn’t believe I had a possibility of succeeding, I wouldn’t get inside the helmet. That puts me on edge, and the competition in the IndyCar Series is so fierce that if you sneeze, you lose a tenth of a second.”
In the media category, Castroneves will be joined by longtime NASCAR owner Jack Roush, Pete Brock from sports cars, Dick LaHaie from drag racing, NASCAR co-founder Raymond Parks, NASCAR builder Banjo Matthews, and Denise McCluggage, while motorcycle innovators Trey Vance and Byron Hines will be entered as a single entry.
Roush was the driving force behind more than 300 Cup Series victories. Brock was the designer of the 1965 Cobra Daytona coupes, which won the world championship. LaHaie is the first driver and crew chief to win NHRA Top Fuel championships.
Later this month, the last inductee will be announced.
Half of the 200 votes come from journalists and historians, while the other half comes from Hall of Fame members, according to George Levy, president of the Florida-based Hall of Fame. This year’s ballots were cast before Castroneves became the first foreign-born driver to win four Indianapolis 500s, he claimed.
It did, however, add to his first-ballot résumé.
Castroneves is the last back-to-back winner in 2001 and 2002, and was the 500 Rookie of the Year in 2001, in addition to his four Indy victories. He’s placed in the top five at Indy nine times, including three second-place finishes, and has finished in the top ten in 15 of his 21 career races.
Castroneves has six CART victories and 25 IndyCar wins in his career, putting him in a tie for 10th all-time with Paul Tracy and three-time Indy winner Dario Franchitti. His 47 poles in his career place him among the all-time greats.
He achieved the most of his achievements while racing for Team Penske for 23 years. He won the Indianapolis 500 this year with Meyer Shank Racing, the team he will drive for in the Indianapolis Grand Prix on Saturday.
“To announce it now, in the location where Helio created history just a few months ago, is incredible,” said racetrack president Doug Boles. “I know George mentioned the first foreign-born winner, but I believe you are considered a Hoosier by a lot of people here.”
Levy also handed a trophy to Robin Miller, a 2021 inductee and veteran car racing journalist and television commentator.
“At a location like this, there’s a knack to picking talent, and I believe the pace and intensity simply fell right in Helio’s wheelhouse,” Miller said. “I believe he is one of the racers that was forced to compete here. Look at how near Helio is to being a six-time champion, what, 40 feet away?”
