mollyfamwatJust a month after wrapping up production on Joker, Joaquin Phoenix is finally ready to embark on his first promotional tour since the release of the film. The actor has recently been spotted in Atlanta, Georgia and all signs point to a full-on promotion, as he is expected to hit the road and meet fans and media for the first time since the film’s release. The actor is expected to be in town for a week, with no firm sites as of yet.
Joaquin Phoenix is a cool guy. He’s from a cool city, cool family, and is a cool actor. All that being said, he’s never been a huge movie star. As a result, when it was announced that Phoenix was making his acting debut in a film titled “You Were Never Really Here” he instantly became a hot topic.
Take it from the actor, Joaquin Phoenix: You can’t do it alone. The actor, whose recent Joker performance earned positive reviews, has entered the promotion world. For the first time since becoming a household name, Phoenix has stepped out on his own to promote his latest film, the crime drama, The Sisters Brothers. The actor, who has starred in heavy-hitter films like Gladiator and Walk The Line, recently visited the Atlanta Film Festival and spoke with Atlanta journalist and film industry expert, Stephen Fesmire.
The trailer for A24’s forthcoming family drama C’mon C’mon, starring Joaquin Phoenix, has been published. Beautiful black-and-white images and narration from Phoenix as he reads from a book are included in the video. Phoenix’s first picture after his Academy Award-winning performance in Joker is C’mon C’mon.
The story follows an artist (Joaquin Phoenix) who is entrusted to care for his little nephew (Woody Norman), and the two form a connection while driving across the nation. The developing connection that we’ll see in C’mon C’mon is shown in several of the images in this teaser. Robbie Ryan (Marriage Story) did the cinematography, and it looks fantastic.
Mike Mills, who was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for his film 20th Century Women in 2016, directed the film. Thumbsucker and Beginners, which earned Christopher Plummer an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, were both directed by Mills. Mills also wrote the screenplay. Molly Webster, Jaboukie Young-White, and Scoot McNairy round out the cast. C’mon C’mon is produced by Chelsea Barnard, Andrea Longacre-White, and Lila Yacoub.
C’mon C’mon debuted at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2nd and got positive feedback. “Mills’ picture is not going to appeal to everyone,” Clayton Davis of Variety observed, “but I’d be negligent if I didn’t mention that this might be the finest script written in the past decade, something the writers branch may acknowledge.” Norman’s acting as Phoenix’s nephew in the film has also been praised.
“Norman is one of the best discoveries,” Davis said, “and it’s impossible not to be charmed by his quirky delivery and poignant rhythms.” “Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland) and Jacob Tremblay (Room) are two recent young performers who have been overlooked by the Academy. It will be up to the SAG nominating committee to keep him in the conversation, which is more receptive to younger actors.”
In contrast to his Joker character and other performances such as Gladiator and The Master, Phoenix seems to be aiming for a more subtle and muted portrayal. Some reviewers have remarked on Phoenix’s more subdued performance in this film.
“It doesn’t hurt that Phoenix has never been more natural,” said Indiewire’s David Ehrlich. “When he squares up against a real child, he can reveal that same vulnerability without the strange effect that is required to make the Joker more mature. It’s unusual to watch a film in which Phoenix plays a ‘regular’ guy who is irritated by the oddities of people around him, yet he never seems like an alien in a human suit.”
Along with this, Phoenix has a slew of other projects in the works, including Ari Aster’s Disappointment Blvd., which stars Nathan Lane and Patti Lupone. He’ll also be seen in Ridley Scott’s Kitbag as Napoleon Bonaparte. C’mon C’mon does not yet have a release date, however it will be shown at the New York Film Festival on October 4th. Based on the reviews and Mills’ previous work, this may be a picture that gets a lot of buzz around award season.
