It’s a question that gets asked all the time in the locker room: Premier League or Champions League, Walker said in an exclusive interview with ESPN. For me it’s the Premier League now, because that’s what I grew up with. There are 38 games and you can go to Elland Road [Leeds United] where we’ve had some tough times. Or you go to a nice stadium like Tottenham Hotspur and you have problems. Then there are the hostile places like Anfield. Things have changed.
Everyone’s always talking: Tuesday night against Stoke – when you have games like that, you have to persevere and get a result. But I was very lucky. In four years [at City] I won three Premier League titles. The only thing I miss is the Champions League.
I think that would just be the icing on the cake. And maybe [we’ll] also have people sit down and evaluate a little bit more than they do the talent of this group of players and what we’ve accomplished in four years, because I think sometimes it goes a little bit unnoticed.
City will take on Chelsea in the final on Saturday, who recaptured the Premier League by stripping Liverpool of the title and extending Pep Guardiola’s record of three titles in five seasons at the club. This is his 10th trophy with City, including four League Cups, an FA Cup and two Community Shields, all of which he has won with a proactive and unique way of playing football that has earned him a place in the pantheon of great English footballers.
But there is one last hurdle to take: the conquest of Europe. The trip to Porto this weekend will be their first appearance in the finals. You can win the European Cup as early as 23 if they beat Chelsea, and the first new name on the trophy since the Blues beat Bayern in 2012.

If we want to be recognised as one of the best teams, we should probably win the Champions League, Walker admitted. And I also think that for the club, for Manchester City, for the amount of money that the owners have invested – not just the players but the infrastructure – to build this club up to where it is today, I think we are in their debt as well.
They are keen to reach the Champions League and we can finally say we have that chance….. OK, we’ve made history, we’re in the final, but for City fans, for whom Manchester United have been neighbours for so long and won so many trophies in a few years, it can’t be pleasant.

The Blues have impressed under Thomas Tuchel, but three defeats in their last four games, including a loss in the FA Cup final and Tottenham’s win over Leicester City to stay in the top four, only reinforces the feeling that City’s time has come.
The die is cast, Walker says. I don’t want to sit here and make it seem like all we have to do is come in and win the game. Chelsea are a very, very good team, with a very good manager who has proven to be one of the best tactically, given what he has done for the club in a short time.
Pep’s method and ours is to keep the ball, but when you get to the Champions League final, the little details make a big difference. Loss of focus or production of the game. We just have to make sure we are well prepared, both defensively and offensively.
A win would cement this City squad’s place in history, but Walker has one last thought as he believes his achievements may have gone unnoticed.
