(CNN) –
The Surface 4 laptop is a pretty good thing. Like the previous Surface Laptop 3, Microsoft’s latest flagship looks great, has a bright, uniquely sized screen, and offers one of the best typing experiences in the professional space. Now it has even more powerful processors that can handle long days of spreadsheets and zoom calls, and it comes in a new blue variant.
The Notebook 4 is not without its faults: battery life is not the best we’ve tested, and the speakers and webcam leave something to be desired. But the excellent keyboard, large touchscreen, and robust performance make it a great asset that has unique advantages over some of our favorite laptops, including the MacBook Pro and Dell XPS 13.
Wondering if the Surface Laptop 4 is for you? Here’s what we think after spending most of our work week with Microsoft’s latest laptop.
For whom? The Surface Laptop 4 (from $999; microsoft.com) is for those looking for a versatile laptop that offers fast performance, a big screen and a great keyboard in a slim, highly portable design.
What you need to know: Microsoft’s latest laptops come in 13.5- and 15-inch variants, each with a choice of AMD and Intel processors. But whichever version you choose, you get a unique 3:2 screen, a small but diverse array of ports, and one of the best keyboards on the market.
As he compares himself: The Surface Laptop 4’s wide, tall screen offers more screen space than the Dell XPS 13 and MacBook Pro, and its touch capabilities and more varied ports give it an advantage over the latter. However, battery life isn’t as good as those two rivals, and the speakers aren’t as clear as Apple’s.

The Surface Laptop 4 doesn’t differ much from the Surface Laptop 3 – and that’s not a bad thing. Microsoft’s flagship laptop is surprisingly thin and minimalist, with bezels about a half-inch thick and a lightweight 2.8-pound chassis that we could easily carry from room to room.
We tested the 13.5-inch model in a beautiful new Ice Blue color that, combined with the soft Alacantara fabric that covers the laptop, makes for one of the most beautiful and comfortable laptops we’ve ever held. There are a number of other color and material options, including a platinum Alcantara model and matte black and sandstone metal variants, but we highly recommend choosing the Alcantara model. It’s so much fun to use.
The keyboard of the Surface Laptop 4 is also very pleasant to use. The keys are elastic, fast and have a generous depth of 1.3 millimeters. They provide a satisfactory level of feedback and keep our hands comfortable during days of processing emails and documents. Laptop 4’s keyboard is even better than the MacBook Pro’s excellent Magic Keyboard, thanks to longer usage time and a soft fabric surface that covers the entire area around the keyboard and serves as a hand rest. It will be hard to go back to all-metal laptops.
There is one small problem: the Surface Laptop 4 does not have a right Ctrl key, which is rather disastrous for the way we copy, paste and format text. This applies to all Surface keyboards and may not be for everyone, but it’s worth noting for people who tend to work this way. However, the Laptop 4’s keyboard is so good that we didn’t hesitate to adjust our muscle memory a bit.

The Surface Laptop 4 is pretty minimalist when it comes to ports. There’s only one USB-C port, one USB port, one headphone jack, and one Surface Connect port for connecting to the included proprietary charger (you can also charge the laptop with a USB-C cable). Despite its slimness, we found the Laptop 4’s USB-A port to be a great convenience that many modern laptops no longer have, as we could easily connect a number of peripherals that use the old standard without having to insert a dongle.
Overall, the MacBook Pro has plenty of ports, including four USB-C ports, but we often have to unscrew the adapter if we want to connect a webcam or external microphone. The Dell XPS 13, our current favorite Windows laptop, has the unique advantage of a microSD card slot for transferring photos and videos, but it only has two USB-C ports. So if you still have a bunch of mice, drives, and headphones that use the classic USB-A port, the Laptop 4 might be more suited to your setup.

The Surface Laptop 4 hides plenty of detail and clarity in a bright 13.5-inch display. With a resolution of 2256 x 1504, the Laptop 4 has a unique 3:2 ratio that sets Microsoft laptops apart from the competition – and gives them unique advantages.
This type of screen is considerably larger than the widescreen of most 13-inch laptops, which is useful for keeping more documents and spreadsheets on the screen at once. Laptop 4’s large screen proved particularly useful when multitasking, as we often split the screen between two documents at once and could always see both documents clearly.
At first glance, it doesn’t seem like a significant difference, but if you put the Surface Laptop 4 next to the MacBook Pro, you’ll notice that Microsoft’s computer has an extra inch of vertical space. And unlike Apple’s laptops, the Laptop 4 has a responsive touchscreen that lets you easily zoom in on web pages, switch between browser tabs and draw badly in Paint.
Fortunately, the Laptop 4 makes good use of the extra space and offers enough color and brightness for watching programs and movies. Looking at Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the blue and red colors of John Walker’s Captain America costume looked rich and realistic. And when we saw the X-Wings fight the TIE fighters in the epic finale of Star Wars: Skywalker, the red and green laser beams glowed, as did the cherry red armor of the Sith soldiers.
In addition to the Laptop 4’s large, colorful screen, it features a pair of robust speakers that support positively accurate sound reproduction with Dolby Atmos. So it was easy to get caught up in the massive superhero battles of Avengers: Endgame, where you could hear the satisfying sound of blows, weapons and explosions coming from different directions. And when it came to work, conference calls and Slack notifications were clearly visible.
On the other hand, the laptop 4’s speakers were quite a mishmash when we played music. Phoebe Bridgers’ ethereal voice in Garden Song was rich and clear and matched well with the dank guitars of Microsoft Laptop, but after the chorus the whole song got a little muddy and bloated at full volume. The bright guitars and smooth synths of Tigers Jaw’s Can’t Wait Forever were crisp and sharp on Laptop 4, but the bass was missing and the vocals were a bit drowned out in the mix.

Let’s start with the good stuff: We didn’t notice any noticeable stutters or slowdowns with the laptop 4, and it handles games just fine. Our Surface Laptop 4 was equipped with an 11th generation Intel Core i7 processor. It is powered by 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, which proved to be enough power to handle the daily workload without any hiccups.
We never experienced stuttering on the Microsoft machine, even when we had over 30 Google Chrome tabs open while listening to music on Spotify and chatting on Slack and Discord. Microsoft’s laptop also proved reliable for rendering videos: 4K video is converted from one file type to another in less than two and a half minutes.
And while the Surface Laptop 4 is not positioned as a gaming laptop, the built-in Intel Iris Xe GPU is ideal for less demanding games. In Rocket League, we were able to enjoy an automatic football game at 60 fps (the ideal fluidity level for such a game) at a slightly reduced resolution (1872 x 1248) and maintain a high replayability of 45 to 50 frames with fully adjusted resolution and graphics settings.
While it’s powerful enough for intensive multitasking, our Surface Laptop 4 was a little tricky when it came to battery life. In our battery test, which involved streaming 4K videos at half screen brightness, Microsoft’s laptop lasted about 8.5 hours.
That in itself isn’t a bad thing and it gets you through most of your work day, but it doesn’t make Microsoft’s claims true. While there are no specific battery figures for our model (Intel Core i7, 13.5 inches), its second largest counterpart, the Core i5, 13.5 inches, lasts up to 17 hours.
Microsoft points out that the Laptop 4’s battery life varies depending on the type of use, but in our tests it’s significantly shorter than the competition. We got about 14 hours out of the MacBook Pro and nearly 10 hours out of the Dell XPS 13. We would have liked the Laptop 4 to last longer, but we have to admit that it discharges so quickly: with the included Surface Connect cable, we were able to charge the PC from 0 to 100 percent in about an hour.
Another area where the Laptop 4 leaves something to be desired is the 720p webcam. We noticed that the camera quickly varies in brightness when trying to take a picture (even in good light), and most selfies we took ended up dark and blurry. During the video interviews we received mixed reactions from colleagues: Some said we didn’t look good, others noted that we were clear and that the camera handled the overall lighting well. Laptop 4’s built-in camera works in emergencies, but we recommend using a dedicated webcam if you’re buying a Microsoft laptop.
The Surface Laptop 4’s webcam works seamlessly with Microsoft’s Windows Hello facial recognition technology, so you can sign in using just your face. Setting up a personal login via Hello took a few seconds, and being able to switch directly from the login screen to the desktop without having to enter a password was very convenient. This feature is common on Windows laptops, but is still missing on the MacBook.
Mike Andronico/KNN.
While we love the Surface Laptop 4, our model is just one of many different versions you can buy. Microsoft’s laptop comes in 13.5- and 15-inch variants, each with different processor and color options.
When it comes to choosing between AMD and Intel, AMD models have a lower starting price for those on a budget and are designed for slightly longer battery life, while Intel models offer the best processor options for those willing to pay for the highest performance. The Surface Laptop 4’s large number of configurations can be confusing. Here’s a brief explanation.
13.5 Surface Notebook 4
The smaller Surface Laptop 4 is powered by AMD and Intel processors and offers the widest range of colors and materials. This is the only version of the Surface Laptop 4 with a soft Alacantara finish (which we tested and highly recommend), and the only variant that offers Ice Blue and Sandstone in addition to Platinum and Matte Black.
Surface 15 4 Laptop
If you need more screen space, it’s worth considering a 15-inch 4 laptop. This model also features the more powerful of the two Ryzen variants, up to the Ryzen R7 processor, which should offer both serious creatives and casual gamers solid graphics and battery performance. However, the 15-inch variant is only available in metallic finish, with a choice of platinum or matte black.
Mike Andronico/KNN.
The Surface Laptop 4 is actually a great all-around laptop, with some unique advantages that set it apart from the competition. The large, tall screen is ideal for multitasking, the keyboard is one of the most comfortable we’ve ever used (especially if you opt for the Alacantara model), and the combination of USB-A and USB-C ports lets you plug in all sorts of accessories. Our Core i7 model performed well even under heavy load, and even did well in light gaming.
However, the Model 4 laptop’s battery life lagged behind rivals like the Dell XPS 13 and MacBook Pro in our testing, and the webcam and speakers aren’t as responsive during conversations or distracting during music. The XPS 13 is worth checking out for those who want an impressive edge-to-edge display, and the MacBook Pro is perfect for those who prefer Apple software or want even better performance. But if you don’t mind having a charger on hand, the Surface Laptop 4 does a lot of things right – and it looks as good as it sounds.
