The Atlanta Braves are now under .500, while the Brewers and Pirates are in first place. The Pirates are no longer the only team to own a 7-3 record, as the Cardinals have bounced back to win seven games in a row. Meanwhile the Cardinals are a bit less happy, as they are now 6-8-1.
What if the All-Star game was just a popularity contest?
The Atlanta Braves are currently in first place in the NL East, on their way to their first division title since 2005. The Braves have now won back-to-back games in 15 of their 18 games, including a tie-breaking win over the Nationals on Sunday. In fact, the Braves have won five-plus games in a row on three separate occasions this season.. We’ve reached the point in the season where it’s hard to see Boston as a real contender to win the division. The Yankees and the Rays have narrowed Boston’s lead in the division, but the consistency of offensive production and the good performance of the rotation’s rearguard are still a positive sign. If Nathan Eovaldi and Eduardo Rodriguez improve, this team will be a force to be reckoned with in the division. — Lee

Cleveland’s deep well of injury-related luck seems to have dried up this week. Losing hitter Frantil Reyes (oblique muscle) for five to seven weeks is a blow, as he was the only Cleveland player besides MVP candidate Jose Ramirez to have a pretty good offensive season. The hype surrounding aspirant Owen Miller became insignificant after Reyes’ fall, as Cleveland had no better internal option to replace him. But the newcomer is off to a slow start. Then starter Zach Plesac injured his thumb when he took off his shirt. (Friends do not allow their friends to undress during anger). It’s also a pain point on Cleveland’s thin 40-man roster, as the rotation was adequate rather than exceptional. What may keep the Indians afloat is an immediate roster dominated by the Tigers, Orioles, Mariners and Pirates. — Doolittle.

Have the Marlins found something in 26-year-old right-hander Cody Potite, who is 2-0 and 1.06 in his first three major league starts? Potit, a 2015 fourth-round pick out of UCLA, has an average fastball, but has a high-spin curveball, slider and menu dump. As a junior in 2019, he only had a 6.1 RBI average per nine games, but he’s throwing strikes and looking good so far. — Shoefield

After losing four games to the Giants, the Reds are under .500. Losing two of three games to Milwaukee – also at home – didn’t help. Jesse Winker and Nick Castellanos continue to hit, but pitching remains a big problem. After a tough week on the field, the Reds team is last in the league and only ahead of the Angels in all of baseball in ERA. — Rogers

The Angels hope to remain relevant until Mike Trout returns – likely after the All-Star break – if they pitch well and play better defense, and if they get unexpected contributions from their lineup. More importantly, they need Anthony Rendon to perform. The third baseman, who signed a $245 million contract last season, hit .222/.316/.333 in his first 114 appearances Wednesday. — Gonzalez

As the trade deadline approaches, some Tigers have become interesting options. We’ve talked about starter Matthew Boyd before, and although he cooled off a bit after a good start, he belongs on the roster. He is joined by Michael Fulmer, who like Boyd has one year of arbitration rights after 2021, but his payout for 2020 is less than half that of his left-handed teammate. In a classic case of value production with a role change, Fulmer was Detroit’s best reliever in terms of leverage, consistency and dominance. He’s reached 100 mph as a reliever and throws an average of a thousand mph more than he throws as a starter. Also keep an eye on outfielder Robbie Grossman. — Doolittle. The Nationals could not hold on to the best record in the National League, but they still managed to make a big impact this week. The Nationals got the win-loss record they wanted, while the Braves and Mets both fell just barely short of their goals. The Braves lost their third straight game, while the Mets lost three in a row.. Read more about mlb team power rankings 2021 and let us know what you think.
