NFL training camp updates – Deshaun Watson, Saquon Barkley return; Lamar Jackson dealing and more

First training camp practice for the Houston Texans has concluded and the attention is on the camp battles underway. At the top of the list is the quarterback competition between Deshaun Watson, Landry Jones and Tom Savage. Watson suffered a broken left fibula in a non-contact injury while Jones is recovering from an ACL tear. And this is where Lamar Jackson comes in, the rookie out of Louisville has a solid camp and might be the dark horse in the race.

With training camp set to begin in two weeks, several NFL players are ready to put the months of offseason work to the test in pre-season action.

The Houston Texans opened training camp on Saturday, but they weren’t the only story. The New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, and Oakland Raiders all had their first practices under new coaches. The New York Jets kicked off the festivities by making quarterback Sam Darnold the youngest quarterback ever to start a season opener. The Philadelphia Eagles continued their trend of giving the ball to their star running back, in this case, rookie running back sensation, Saquon Barkley. The Pittsburgh Steelers got their first look at the newest player in their running back stable, Rashaad Penny. The New York Giants got their first look at their quarterback of the future, quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, Josh Rosen. The Buffalo Bills got their first look at their. Teams continued to work at training camps around the NFL on Monday before the first full slate of preseason games began on Thursday.

Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans, who practiced for the first time in five days, and Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles, who was activated off the physically unable to perform list and returned to practice Monday for the first time since tearing the ACL in his right knee early last season, were among those who participated.

Lamar Jackson is on on the fence about being vaccinated at Ravens camp, but he wasted no time getting back on track with his favorite target in the quarterback’s second practice back from COVID-19.

Here’s everything you need to know about the league’s training camps:

Following being infected with COVID-19 twice in the last eight months, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson said it was a “personal choice” whether he would be vaccinated. “I just came off the COVID list,” Jackson said after Monday’s practice when asked whether he would receive the vaccination. “I’ve got to speak to my staff about this and see how they feel about it, then I’ll keep studying as much as I can about it and we’ll proceed from there,” he says. Does that imply he’s considering vaccination? Jackson replied, “We’ll see.” “I’m speaking with the physicians, so we’ll see.”

1617257046_711_NFC-East-QB-breakdown-New-deals-new-faces-higher Giants’ Barkley is optimistic that he’ll be ready for the season opener.

Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants returned to practice on Monday for the first time since tearing his ACL in his right knee early last season, and he voiced confidence that he would be ready for Week 1. Barkley views the fact that he has more than a month to prepare for the season start on Sept. 12 as a plus. “I suppose you could say I’m optimistic with my attitude,” Barkley remarked. “Being able to practice now is certainly preferable than later in camp.”

1617297738_152_NFL-mock-draft-2021-Todd-McShays-predictions-for-all Pats’ Henry suffers a shoulder injury and is scheduled for an MRI.

Hunter Henry, a tight end with the New England Patriots, had a shoulder injury in Sunday’s practice and is undergoing an MRI, according to a source. While the injury does not seem to be severe at this time, it is uncomfortable, and Henry may miss time in the preseason, according to sources.

1617257048_653_NFC-East-QB-breakdown-New-deals-new-faces-higher Curtis Samuel, Washington’s wide receiver, has failed to practice this summer since he began camp on the physically unable to perform list due to a groin injury and has been on the COVID-19 list since July 29. Coach Ron Rivera, on the other hand, is unconcerned since Samuel spent three seasons with his staff in Carolina. Samuel’s comeback isn’t set in stone. However, OTAs were his sole encounter with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. However, without Samuel, other young receivers would have had greater chances. Dyami Brown, a rookie, has made an impression. Samuel’s absence has allowed Antonio Gandy-Golden, a second-year wideout, greater opportunities. Last season, the 2020 fourth-round selection struggled, and injuries didn’t help matters. He’s been more active in camp, but he still has to show that he can avoid media attention. With Samuel out, he’s had more opportunities to practice against the starters, which has given him and the coaches a solid idea of what he’s capable of. ‘John Keim’

Marcus Mariota, the former No. 2 overall selection and Heisman Trophy winner, has been happy to serve as a backup to Derek Carr as he recovers from several injuries. Mariota, on the other hand, isn’t satisfied with just holding a clipboard. He’s keeping an eye out for possible starting jobs in the NFL. Mariota, who has started 61 of his 64 career games, said in just his second media conference since joining the Raiders in March 2020, “Yeah, definitely.” “It’s my goal [to start over], and I keep track of what’s going on because it’s important for us as players to know what’s going on. But with that being said, I enjoy this team. It’s a great organization to play for, and this quarterback room is awesome. I think Derek leads the charge. He’s a great guy to be around. It’s just a lot of fun to learn and grow together.” Gutierrez, Paul

1617297729_967_NFL-mock-draft-2021-Todd-McShays-predictions-for-all Dante Fowler Jr., an outside linebacker, and Kaleb McGary, a right tackle, returned to Falcons practice on Monday. McGary was activated from PUP and Fowler was removed from the COVID-19 list. While neither was made accessible to the media, both took part in practice to different degrees. Fowler returned to the first team for some 11-on-11 practice and had at least one sack of quarterback Matt Ryan. Fowler matched with Jake Matthews on one rep in individual practice, demonstrating the gap in potential explosion between him and the other Falcons outside linebackers. McGary, on the other hand, had less options and had to work with the second unit. Willie Beavers worked with the first group for a little longer. The second group also included Jalen Mayfield. 1617297759_757_NFL-mock-draft-2021-Todd-McShays-predictions-for-allPass-blocking hasn’t always been easy for Orlando Brown Jr., who was traded from the Ravens and is attempting to become a full-time left tackle. Brown, who has admitted that he isn’t as athletically endowed as many left tackles, has struggled with the speed rush in one-on-one drills at times. Brown has largely outperformed his teammates in team exercises. “The thing that impresses me is that he doesn’t repeat the errors he makes,” offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. “That’s a fantastic indication.” — Adam Teicher

1617297753_655_NFL-mock-draft-2021-Todd-McShays-predictions-for-allIt didn’t take long for Lamar Jackson and Mark Andrews to rekindle their friendship. Jackson struck Andrews on a couple of 20-yard throws in the middle of the field in his second session after returning from COVID-19. Andrews hauled in a ball that Jackson lofted over the defenders with one hand. Since 2018, Andrews has caught 135 passes from Jackson. Over that period, no other Ravens player has more than 98 catches. Jamison Hensley (Jamison Hensley)

1617297755_360_NFL-mock-draft-2021-Todd-McShays-predictions-for-allMarquez Callaway, a second-year Saints wide receiver, was previously featured in this space last week. But then he went one better with a touchdown grab from Taysom Hill in red zone exercises on Saturday and another touchdown catch from Jameis Winston in red zone drills on Monday. While Michael Thomas and Tre’Quan Smith have been out by injuries (Smith’s specific ailment is not anticipated to be a long-term problem), Callaway has stepped into the No. 1 receiver position with confidence over the last week. Callaway caught only 21 receptions as an undrafted rookie last season, but he seems to be on his way to a much larger role this season. Triplett, Mike

1617297734_976_NFL-mock-draft-2021-Todd-McShays-predictions-for-allWith Cameron Erving out with a shoulder injury, you couldn’t help but notice that right tackle Taylor Moton played the majority of the plays at left tackle during team drills. But what struck out the most was that coach Matt Rhule didn’t see Moton, which implies Moton wasn’t making any errors in the coaching realm. In fact, during a two-minute drill in which quarterback Sam Darnold completed 5 of 6 ball attempts, the offense nearly perfectly maneuvered for a score. He did it with a line that featured Moton at left tackle, Trent Scott at right tackle, and Pat Elflein, the starting left guard, at center. Matt Paradis, the starting center, was given the day off. At the very least, this demonstrates that the line’s depth is stronger than it was at any time last season. David Newton is an author.

NFC-East-QB-breakdown-New-deals-new-faces-higherAfter Saturday’s practice against the Los Angeles Rams, the Cowboys have only one more full session before their second preseason game in Oxnard, California. Mike McCarthy wanted to make sure his guys could recover after playing the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Hall of Fame Game and then practicing against the Rams in a 48-hour period. He is happier with where his team is at this point in camp than he was a year ago. McCarthy said, “At the end of the day, it’s about the team going ahead and making progress.” “You can tell that this football team is improving in training camp. We are getting better. We still have a long way to go, but that is why you have training camp,” Todd Archer said.

1617297751_755_NFL-mock-draft-2021-Todd-McShays-predictions-for-all James Washington was absent from practice on Monday, a day after he seemed to suffer a lower left leg or knee injury. Washington played in a couple team periods on Sunday, but he spent the rest of the day on the bench with an ice pack wrapped over his lower left leg. Coach Mike Tomlin said Monday that his third-year receiver, who ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported had sought a trade due to reduced playing time, was being medically examined and that he would have an update Tuesday. Washington’s unhappiness with his position on the squad was also denied by Tomlin. Anthony Johnson received extra repetitions with the first-team offense late in Monday’s practice with Washington and fellow receiver Ray-Ray McCloud sidelined. Johnson, who spent last season on the Steelers practice squad, has established himself as a key member of the secondary receiving group.
