mollyfamwatLately, a lot of attention has been paid to the Twin Cities as a place to do business. I say this because of a new list produced by the World Economic Forum, which identifies the Twin Cities as one of the top 10 global cities in which to do business in the world. Cities on the list include Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore, Los Angeles, Taipei, Dubai, and Shanghai.
In November 2016, the Twin Cities were recognized internationally for their ability to deal with the most complex emergency in the world. The Twin Cities were part of a team of cities that participated in the 2016 International Marathon of Hope, which was a race to help raise funds for cancer research; the Twin Cities and Sierra Vista, Arizona, placed first and second, respectively. The race took place in both cities and featured running alongside hot air balloons as part of the race course.
The Twin Cities and Sierra Vista, two cities in Arizona, are the first places to earn the distinction of “elite global recognition”. Atlanta-based consulting firm Mercer is now awarding cities based on their performance in five areas: health, education, business environment, infrastructure, and culture & environment. The Twin Cities were recognized in several of these categories, while Sierra Vista was recognized in only one, but both cities beat out a number of other cities, including Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Miami, and San Francisco.

Hospitals Reopen for Maternity Tours and Classes in Person
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Care Award has been given to Tenet Health Central Coast Hospitals, Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, and Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.
The IBLCLC Care Award is a worldwide acknowledgment of best practices for preserving, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding. It also shows that the hospitals are dedicated to ensuring that their personnel has achieved the renowned International Board Certified Lactation Consultant accreditation.

Only 12 of California’s 341 hospitals (and 129 of the 6,090 in the United States) have earned this honor, and two of them are part of Tenet Health Central Coast. Both hospitals have also been designated as Baby-Friendly birth facilities by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a designation created to recognize maternity services that support successful and sustained breastfeeding for babies to give them the best start in life.
The news coincides with the opening of Maternity tours and courses in Twin Cities and Sierra Vista. Expectant parents and birthing coaches may now visit the hospitals’ Birth and Baby Centers to learn more about what to anticipate during labor and delivery, as well as what support courses are offered and a sneak look at the private birthing rooms and recovery suites.
The Deluxe Hydrotherapy Labor Tubs at the Birthing Centers enable women to benefit from the relaxing qualities of warm water and aromatherapy to help relieve labor discomfort. These are permanent tubs that are ergonomically intended to support the back and enable access for personal doctors, unlike the inflatable tubs often seen at other institutions.
Twin Cities also features a unique Outdoor Zen Garden as a part of the Birth & Baby Center’s third-floor terrace as a calming respite for those desiring fresh air and a tranquil setting overlooking Templeton’s rolling hills and vineyards.
Many maternity courses, such as Preparing for Childbirth, Breastfeeding and Returning to Work, and Introducing Solid Foods to Your Child, are now accessible online for the convenience and safety of moms.
In-person support courses, such as Navigating Motherhood, are also available in Twin Cities, where positive coping techniques and methods for effectively facing the new difficulties of parenting are taught. These courses also include understanding the risk factors and symptoms of postpartum depression.
An outpatient lactation clinic is also available in Twin Cities.
Newborns may face unanticipated difficulties, and Sierra Vista’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – the county’s only Level III NICU – is ready to assist and offers two new methods to support families with infants in need of NICU care. Tenet Health Central Coast is introducing the NicView webcam system to assist families feel close and connected 24/7 after mother is released from the hospital if it turns out that a baby has to remain in the NICU after mom is allowed to go home. There are staff members that are qualified in Neonatal Touch and Massage Therapy for the NICU infants. Increased weight growth, better developmental scores, and faster release from the hospital are all benefits of this treatment. Parents benefit as well since this treatment strengthens their connection with their children and gives them more confidence in their parenting abilities.
