Chris Harrison fired for comments on Rachel Kirkconnell controversy.
The former Bachelor producer is backing ABC after the network announced that Chris Harrison will not return as host for the next season of The Bachelorette.
I think it’s a step in the right direction, Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, producer from 2002 to 2004, told Us Weekly. Looking at Chris’ interview in Extra, I think to myself: It’s a lecture on oppression, and it seems so outdated. It looks like a dinosaur. He interrupted her and spoke over her, saying something like: I don’t know which group is right in this case, and clearly the oppressed group probably knows more than you do.
She continued: He seems so far behind the times, and I think it’s an appropriate decision to update the franchise. Look at the ranks of executive producers, look at the host for example, bring it to 2021.
Harrison was called to resign after defending Rachel Kirkconnell’s presence at an Extra campaign event.
He wondered if the photos would have been considered poor quality when they were taken in 2018. Does 2018 look good, or does 2021 not? Because there’s a big difference, he told Extra correspondent and former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay. She replied: It doesn’t look good.
That was not the case in 2018, Harrison continued. I’m not defending Rachel, I just know that, I don’t know, 50 million people did this in 2018. It was the kind of party a lot of people went to. … Where is this lens we hold, was it available and did we all look through it in 2018?
Amid the reactions, Harrison issued two apologies, one of which announced that he would be stepping down for a while.

ABC has announced that former Bachelorettes Kaitlyn Bristowe and Tayshia Adams will replace Katie Thurston for Harrison for one season of the popular dating show.

Chris Harrison will not be hosting the next season of The Bachelorette. This is according to a statement signed by Warner Horizon and ABC Entertainment. We support Chris in his work, which he does with dedication. In her absence, former singles Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe will support the new single until the end of next season.
The statement also promises greater representation behind the scenes, including among executive producers.
Harrison’s long-term future with the franchise remains uncertain. Thurston’s season was supposed to start last weekend in New Mexico.

Shapiro mentioned Harrison’s on-screen argument and said a similar issue was addressed on the Lifetime show she created, UnREAL.
UnREAL is the fictional story of the producers of the reality show Everlasting. She drew a clear parallel to the Bachelor franchise.
I was under the impression that Chris was claiming a bit that he didn’t know if the Plantation photo would be good in 2018 – it is: How could she know? In 2020, the target did not exist. – For me, it was very emotional because UnREAL served that plot very strongly in 2016 and the genre was very much in the spotlight this season, Shapiro told Us Weekly. We’ve talked about it, that’s for sure. For example, UnREAL had a black male lead before the other show had one…. and so I’m pretty sure he knew about it, and I call it complete and utter bullshit because he was defending himself.
