Anderson Silva, Tito Ortiz to meet in eight-round boxing match on Sept. 11

We don’t know how Anderson Silva and Tito Ortiz will fare in their boxing match. But it will be the first high-profile boxing match in the US since the controversial heavyweight bout between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002, and the first in which a former UFC champion will take on an ex-UFC champion in the ring. According to the promoters, the bout may be an “unfolding of the light heavyweight championship bout,” and it will be the first time in over 10 years that an MMA fighter has fought a boxer.

Tito Ortiz is desperate to avenge his only loss in the past 21 years. He says that it was “a gift” that he got to fight Silva in the first place, and that after he took the fight, he made it clear he would make the most of it. Anderson Silva is desperate to stay on course with his boxing career, and believes he is more than ready to win his first title since 2014. In addition, the 38-year-old former champion is one of the sport’s biggest draws.

The event, which will be held at the Stub Hub Center in Los Angeles, was announced by the former UFC middleweight champion earlier this week. Silva, 37, is a 14-year veteran who is widely considered one of the best fighters of all-time. He owns a perfect 23-0 record and has won titles in four different weight classes. Ortiz, 37, spent his entire professional career as a heavyweight, and he was one of the sport’s biggest stars. He won the UFC’s light heavyweight belt in 2006 and defended it four times before losing it to former middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva in 2012.. There will be a battle between two MMA legends, but it will not take place in a cage.

According to Triller co-founder Ryan Kavanaugh, Anderson Silva and Tito Ortiz have signed contracts to fight in an eight-round cruiserweight boxing battle on Sept. 11 in the co-feature before Oscar De La Hoya takes on Vitor Belfort in the pay-per-view main event.

The Triller PPV will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will include two additional boxing bouts: former heavyweight champion David Haye vs. Joe Fournier and Andy Vences vs. Jono Carroll in a 130-pound fringe contenders bout.

“I am extremely thrilled to get the chance to go in the ring with Triller Fight Club on Sept. 11 versus Tito Ortiz, who is truly changing things up in the combat sports industry,” Silva stated.

The fights between Silva and Ortiz and Haye and Fournier will be sanctioned by the California State Athletic Commission, indicating that they will be legitimate contests rather than exhibitions. Eight two-minute rounds will be fought between Silva and Ortiz, while eight three-minute rounds will be fought between Haye and Fournier.

Silva-Ortiz will be officiated by “Big” John McCarthy, a veteran longtime UFC referee.

Silva, 46, stunned Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in just his third professional boxing bout in June, and immediately began talks for a fight with YouTube sensation Logan Paul.

Silva is a former UFC middleweight champion who, with a reign of 2,457 days, owns the record for the longest championship reign in the promotion’s history. With 18 main event appearances on UFC PPV, he is one of the most well-known fighters in MMA history. In October, he was released by the UFC after a fourth-round TKO loss to Uriah Hall, his seventh loss in his previous nine outings in the Octagon.

Ortiz was also one of the most bankable stars in the UFC. He’ll make his pro boxing debut at the age of 46, over a decade after his last UFC bout.

“I’m eager to take on a new challenge and battle against Anderson Silva,” Ortiz, a long-reigning UFC light heavyweight champion who made his debut at UFC 13 in 1997, stated. “It means a lot to me as a patriot to fight on September 11th.”

The Haye-Fournier fight will start off a two-part PPV, with the first half aimed towards British fans. Haye, a former heavyweight and cruiserweight champion, is one of Britain’s most famous boxers. In May 2018, he announced his retirement following a second defeat against Tony Bellew.

Fournier is a part-time boxer who stopped musician Reykon on the Jake Paul-Ben Askren Triller undercard in April.

Haye, 40, will return to lead the first half of the pay-per-view event, which starts at 5 p.m. ET. After that, Kavanaugh added, a free-view would begin before the second half of the PPV starts at 9 ET.

“Our aim has always been to provide combat sports, music, and culture to a wider audience,” Kavanaugh added. “To extend MMA into boxing and boxing into MMA; it was teased and the potential of it was demonstrated with [Floyd] Mayweather-[Conor] McGregor…. This battle between two extremely divisive MMA superstars will hopefully encourage the MMA fans to see not just the fight but the way we’re doing boxing.”

After months of speculation surrounding a potential bout, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will finally find out if his nine-fight winning streak is going to be snapped Oct. 7 in the ESPN event. Silva was originally supposed to face former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz in the main event of UFC on Fox 4 in late August, but the event fell apart when Ortiz got sick and failed to pass his medical exam..
