The University Soccer Play-off is expected to play one of its two semifinals at the Rose Bowl as planned, but hopes the California government will ease restrictions on the COVID-19 stadium and allow the families of the players to attend the game in Pasadena, CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said Tuesday night.
At this stage the College Football Playoff looks forward to receiving one of the two semifinals at the Rose Bowl, Hancock said in a statement. As the planning continues, we continue to hope that the Rose Bowl’s call to officials to allow families of student-athletes to attend the games will be well received, as will the families of student-athletes at the Sugar Bowl, other New Year’s games and the championship game in Miami.
The CFP steering committee, consisting of 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame Athletic director Jack Swarbrick, held a video conference Tuesday evening to discuss the Rose Bowl with Hancock’s reporters. Given the reality of 2020, we still reserve the right to make decisions as late as possible.
For example, what would happen if the state of California closed its doors completely and stopped allowing gambling? We’re monitoring the situation, but we plan to play the Rose Bowl in the semifinals.
To the question whether Dallas could be an alternative location for the semi-finals if they cannot be played in Pasadena, Hancock answered: I’m not gonna speculate on that, but we’ll be ready.
Mr. Hancock said there were long-standing similarities.
I may be old-fashioned, but I think it’s important to respect the agreements, he said. We plan to organize the game in California, and we hope that the state will put things in order and allow families to attend.
While a second CFP meeting was scheduled for Thursday, one source said the group shouldn’t discuss the semi-finals again this week and the game is likely to stay at the Rose Bowl, with or without family.
Ideally, however, civil servants hope that the restrictions imposed by the state will be relaxed.
Given the vast space at Rose Bowl Stadium, we are convinced that if families could enter the stadium, they could do so in safety and social isolation, Hancock said in a statement. For many families, this will be the last chance to see their sons play university football. We know that under California’s COVID-19 protocols, fans are generally not allowed to participate. We hope that the few families who want to come will not be prevented.
said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Los Angeles County Director of Health, on the 28th. November at ESPN that sporting events, including professional and university football, will remain without spectators after the district announces an order to return home. Prior to the Pac-12 season, UCLA and USC have applied for and obtained dispensations from the provincial health service, allowing family members to attend home games.
ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura contributed to this report.
