Biography of Indira Gandhi
Indira Gandhi: childhood, education and marriage
Indira Gandhi was born in Allahabad in 1917 to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamla Nehru and was their only child. She spent part of her childhood in India, Switzerland and England, where she studied at Somerville College in Oxford. She stayed in Switzerland with her mother, who died of tuberculosis. She, too, was unable to complete her studies at Somerville College due to a prolonged illness and dropped out without ever receiving her degree. However, she later received an honorary doctorate from the college. His grandfather was Motilal Nehru, who was an early supporter of India’s independence and a staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Coming from a politically oriented family, she had many opportunities to interact with famous freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri, etc. In 1942, she married Feroz Gandhi, who was a member of the Indian National Congress, despite her family’s opposition. She had two children by him, Sanjay and Rajiv Gandhi, who also had careers in politics.
Indira Gandhi’s political career
After returning from Oxford, she worked as her father’s assistant when he was Prime Minister from 1947 to 1965 and accompanied him on many trips abroad. Even though she was considered only a personal assistant, she had considerable power within the government. She was also a member of the then popular Indian independence movement. In 1955, Indira Gandhi was elected to the new 21-member working committee of the Congress party and in the following four years she became president. After the death of his father in 1964, Lal Bahadur Shastri became Prime Minister and the vacant seat of Information and Broadcasting Minister, which he had previously held, was taken over by Indira Gandhi. After Shastri’s death two years later, the Congress Party leadership appointed her as Prime Minister. During her tenure as Prime Minister, she introduced many programs and policies such as the Green Revolution, Pakistan’s defeat in the Pakistan War and the Indian atomic bomb, which made her immensely popular with the voters. However, in the 1970s, high inflation, poverty and protests against electoral corruption led to the imposition of a state of emergency in 1975, which resulted in the abolition of the constitutional rights of citizens, the imprisonment of political opponents and strict control of the press. Other measures, such as forced sterilization on a large scale, also affected his popularity and gave him a reputation for authoritarianism.
End of Indira Gandhi’s political career
When Indira Gandhi was convicted of electoral corruption by the Allahabad High Court in 1975, she was not allowed to participate in the elections for the following six years. Indira Gandhi responded by declaring a state of emergency. She lost the 1977 election and temporarily withdrew from politics. In the same year, his son Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash. In 1980, however, she returned for a fourth term. For most of her fourth term, she tried to solve Punjab’s political problems. In 1984, it ordered the army to open fire on Sikh separatists hiding in the Golden Temple. The number of victims is considerable: at least 450 Sikhs were killed and the Golden Temple was also destroyed. This act earned him deep hatred within the Sikh community.
Assassination of Indira Gandhi
Just five months later, on 31. October 1984, Indira Gandhi is killed by her Sikh bodyguards after storming the Golden Temple in her hometown in retaliation for the attack on the Golden Temple. Three days later she was cremated according to a Hindu ritual.I enjoy writing about and sharing with you the things I love, which is everything from books, food, music, and movies.
