Leeds United 0-0 Chelsea: Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten run stretches to 12 games

Kai Havertz had two of Chelsea’s best chances.

Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten run was extended to 12 games when Chelsea played a thrilling match at Leeds.

Despite the lack of fans to extend the lead, both teams were unlucky not to score as they both hit the woodwork and tested their goalkeepers.

Leeds nearly fell behind through Luke Ayling when teammate Diego Llorente hit the bar of goalkeeper Illan Meslier, before Edward Mendy turned a shot from Tyler Roberts over the same area.

Mendy made a clever save on Rafinha to prevent a third defeat in a row for Leeds.

Kai Havertz missed two good chances for the visitors and his Premier League drought continued, but overall he impressed in an advanced role.

Tuchel will be disappointed that his side did not get the victory that would have allowed them to overtake the number three, Leicester, but his team were put to the test.

His 10-game unbeaten run in the Premier League since the new manager took over is second only to Frank Clarke (Nottingham Forest) and Maurizio Sarri (Chelsea).

Leeds, who have won just one of their last six games, suffered a setback in the first half when striker Patrick Bamford, who was making his 100th appearance for the club, was injured. The player, playing his first game for the club, was injured in front of England coach Gareth Southgate.

Time at Chelsea Leeds storm and take a point

Without the fans, Tuchel could count on a smooth introduction to the traditional rivalry between Leeds and Chelsea, which has continued since the 1970s.

But the German did not seem to like Leeds’ director of football Victor Horta, who was loud throughout the match.

The fair play controversy was heated, although Chelsea immediately kicked the ball outside the lines when they realised Bamford was injured.

Despite these distractions, the away side created the better chances in the first half, with the returning Mason Town, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech combining well behind Kai Havertz, who played in the false nine role.

The £71m new signing, who had a difficult start at Chelsea, showed confidence and came close to scoring a goal in both halves.

His best chance came after the break when he was given time and space in the penalty area, but his shot with the right was blocked.

Mount, who was in control on the left, also gave Pulisic a chance. He fired past Meslier and tested the Leeds goalkeeper from distance. Ben Chilwell and N’Golo Kante were also out of place on the left.

The fact that Leeds’ defence came closest to scoring a goal in the first half was disappointing for the visitors, as a win would have seen them consolidate fourth place and remain one point clear of Manchester United, who are in second place.

But with Mendy in form against Leeds and constantly asking questions, it means Tuchel’s side have only conceded two goals since he replaced Frank Lampard in January.

Leeds impressive but Bamford injury a worry

It was another example of how Leeds can entertain and disappoint in equal measure.

Encouraged by Orta from the boardroom and Bielsa from the technical area, they blew away the Chelsea players from the start.

Although Llorente almost scored a comical own goal, the visitors recovered quickly, with Bamford and Roberts combining to produce an ingenious throw-in that left Chelsea’s best goalkeeper Mendy stranded.

He also saved Rafinha’s shot from close range, and substitute Rhys James made a superb save on Llorente’s rebound.

If that had happened, Leeds could have said they deserved the win.

But even a point against an in-form Chelsea squad would have been in the bag on a wet and windy day that didn’t help their fast passing game on a sticky pitch.

The biggest concern, however, would be Bamford’s explosion in the first half. Worse, attacker Antio Rudiger left the field with his thigh stuck, after trying to fight it off.

With a 10 point lead over the relegation zone, Leeds are not in the relegation zone, but their hopes of finishing in the top 10 will be affected without their main striker Bamford.

There’s more.
