If you are looking for an example of a strong woman in today’s music industry, how about a woman who can literally physically lift her own husband?
I can easily sit down and lift him on his back, Amy McDonald laughs out of her house in North Glasgow, where she fell on the couch with her sweatshirt. But we didn’t have a discussion about whether he wanted to.
When it comes to one of the best singer-songwriters in the country, the material can be sensitive and thoughtful – and never more than on the new album of The Human Demands – but there’s a real power behind it.
I am quite muscular and very strong for a woman, she continued, explaining that she had trained with a powerlifting champion and that the installation of the poles in her garage had kept her common sense during the lockdown.
I think there’s something that really gives you strength, physically. That’s what I’m trying to do. It’s not exactly an aesthetic thing, it’s a sense of strength and competence.
Now, in my third decade in the music industry – I signed my first contract in 2006, which sounds crazy – Amy is happy that the new album was written for the lockdown and apart from the lockdown song she released on YouTube, she has nothing to do with the current situation.

I hope this time next year no one will be interested in the blockbuster album, she said, adding that planning a tour in the middle of next year has helped her focus on something, even though she missed jumping into a car to hang out with mom and dad.
I hope it’s in the past, so I don’t want to write about it. To be honest, I tried not to write much at the time. I let myself be inspired by life and by life, and I have the feeling that no one really does.
The inspiration for the album came from friends who had already fought against depression before Covid, and as Amy made clear, we all have hard times because we’re all so hard on ourselves.
It got me thinking about life and how we make such ridiculous demands on ourselves and others, she said. We think we should be here all the time, we think we should be available 24 hours a day, and everything should be done now.
It’s not that Amy isn’t very happy with herself, it’s just something she leaves behind before she gets older, more thoughtful and calmer.
I got married a few years ago and it has changed my outlook on life, she says about a professional footballer, Richard Foster, who plays for the Scottish League with a one-sided Partick Thistle.
I’ve figured out what I need to worry about more and what I don’t need to worry about so much. That changed my mind. She is also aware that she is now 33 years old and that she works in a sector that generally employs women in their twenties.
I’m not old at all, but as far as the music industry is concerned, I’m old, she said. It’s always a new, bright, young thing… It can be difficult when you start to age like a woman in certain areas. Women are often judged on their appearance, on their age.
His video for the new single Crazy Shade Of Blue certainly rebels against this idea and is a striped affair with Amy in a t-shirt and her tied back.
She goes on to say: I’m not trying to play this game, but unfortunately it still seems to be the world we live in. Women still have to jump through a few hoops to get where they want to go, and it seems that this has always been the case.

So, since she married a soccer player, she thinks she’s YAG? I’m trying to ask a question, hoping she realizes it’s a joke. I don’t base my relationship on what my husband does for a living, she says, without being outraged, but without laughing. There’s never been anything wrong with that.
But she understood, she added: And I’m also the breadwinner, so definitely not VAG!
