While the COVID-19 epidemic has permanently altered the way entertainment conventions are organized, it has also created a chance for some great new events to emerge. This has been particularly true for digital events, which have allowed fans to virtually experience big new disclosures connected to forthcoming films and television series. The second-ever DC FanDome is a fandom for DC fans., a four-hour virtual convention commemorating the greatest in DC Comics films, television, video games, and more, took place this October. This month also featured Day of Disney+, a commemorative event that revealed fresh information about Marvel, Star Wars, and other properties.
From films like Batman is a superhero who protects the city from, The Flash, and Black Adam to television programs like Moon Knight is a fictional character who appears in the, She-Hulk, and Marvel, Ms., both events delivered a wide range of material for their forthcoming projects. The effect of those revelations was seen most strongly on the microblogging site Tumblr, which saw a flurry of enthusiastic responses to the upcoming films and series. Tumblr’s Trends Expert, Cates Holderness, recently spoke with us about the excitement surrounding both DC FanDome and Day of Disney+, as well as recent responses to Eternals and Spider-Man: There’s No Way Back, and what users are most looking forward to in the months ahead.

DC FanDome
: It’s crazy to think that DC FanDome was just a month ago. It seems like an eternity ago, yet it also seems like yesterday. What did you see on Tumblr in the days leading up to the event?
Cates Holderness: There was a lot of excitement and a lot of questions about “What are they going to offer us?” Cates Holderness: There was a lot of anticipation and a lot of questions about “What are they going to give us?” “What kind of clips are we going to see?” “What will we be getting trailers for?” “Are they going to make any announcements?” There was a lot of conjecture about it in the days leading up to the FanDome.

The Batman
When it comes to the event itself, The Batman teaser seems to have broken the internet many times over. Based on the information you’ve previously provided, it seems that the internet — and Tumblr in particular — adores Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman. What trends have you seen in that area?
Certainly. For a variety of reasons, Robert Pattinson is almost universally adored on Tumblr. Of course, there’s the lingering Twilight adoration. But, in the build up to The Batman, he’s been quite forthright and done interviews that have really connected with Tumblr. There was one in particular when he said something along the lines of, “I don’t work out nearly as often as I should. My trainers are furious with me, but I just refuse to do it.” That one was a big hit with the Tumblr community. We’ve recently seen an outpouring of support as well as criticism of industry standards and what performers are required to do these days. That has a lot of support.
We witnessed a huge boost in interactions around The Batman tag on FanDome day. When compared to the day before, on [October] 16th, there was a 365 percent gain. A massive, massive rise.
That’s fantastic.
However, we saw an even greater surge in involvement when it came to The Flash. On the 16th, we noticed a 474 percent increase in interaction. That character is quite popular on Tumblr. There’s a lot of nostalgia for The CW’s Flash series, in my opinion. We witnessed a lot of folks really enjoying The Flash in Justice League. As a result, fans are ecstatic that The Flash will be getting his own film.

The Batman teaser that showed at FanDome really hinted at their connection in a manner that we haven’t necessarily seen on screen. Have you seen any replies, patterns, or reactions to that?
Surprisingly, I had anticipated it to be on the ships list the next week, but it did not. People are probably eager to see how they handle Batman and Catwoman’s relationship. In general, people are highly enthusiastic about Selina Kyle. [She’s] a really popular character. As a result, I believe people are cautiously hopeful, but not totally involved. That’s how I interpret the tone of the scenario.

The Flash
I completely get the nostalgia and passion that has enveloped The CW’s program, The Flash. What type of content trends are you seeing with that movie that has people so enthralled? Between the program, the movies, the comics, and everything else, there’s a lot to draw from.
Yeah! There have been several analogies made to how the show’s [version of] Barry Allen was amusing. It was a lot lighter affair, and I believe that fans are eager to see a deeper dig into this darker realm. There have been several similarities, as well as memes, made between the two forms of the figure.
You mentioned fondness for prior Spider-Man iterations when we spoke about the Spider-Man: No Way Home teaser last time. The Flash teaser, of course, teases Michael Keaton’s return as Batman. Is there any kind of Tumblr nostalgia for his Batman movies? Gifsets from Batman Returns often tend to come up in my experience.
Definitely. I believe there is a great deal of nostalgia for Michael Keaton’s tenure. Tumblr adores Tim Burton, and you can’t go wrong with a major nostalgia hit like that. The Michael Keaton films were lighthearted, but they were also somber in certain ways. Some of the later ’90s Batman films weren’t quite as nasty. People, I believe, are quite thrilled to see the darker, more serious Batman return.

FanDome
We had the Black Adam teaser, we had items for Aquaman and the Shazam! sequels, and we had other huge surprises from FanDome. What were the responses and trends as a result of all of this?
I was shocked that Aquaman didn’t do better, but Shazam! is generating a lot of buzz. They’ve adopted those films as a joyful, cheerful, but yet sinister, series. People were ecstatic to hear the news since that character is really popular.
Were there any more shocks with FanDome on the day or in the days after the event, when you were startled that a character or property was mentioned?
No, it was mostly just Batman and Flash, to be honest. That was one of the main takeaways, and the other was, “Oh, no! This is what I’ll be keeping an eye out for on my dashboard.”

Disney+ Day

Moving ahead to Disney+ Day, the material was presented to the public in an entirely different manner. What did you notice in terms of anticipation or conjecture leading up to the event?
“What are the new programs that we’re going to get?” there was a lot of curiosity. People went crazy after all of the show announcements. People were enraged.
What exactly is it? Because I’m sure the Agatha Harkness show announcement made the rounds on Tumblr.
Yes, it did. However, the most significant boost in interactions we found around any of the newly announced events was around Moon Knight. Cuckoo bananas, to be precise. On the 12th, engagements were up 125,864 percent from the day before.

Moon Knight
That’s insane! I wanted to inquire about Moon Knight in particular since Oscar Issac and Marvel seem like a Tumblr marriage made in heaven.
Yeah! It was somewhat unexpected. Part of that, I believe, is due to the fact that Moon Knight is a lesser-known series. As a result, I believe that individuals are unsure about what to anticipate. As additional information becomes available, I’ll be extremely interested to watch how they respond.

She-Hulk
We also got our first peek at She-Hulk on Disney+ Day. Tatiana Maslany is one of my favorite actresses, and Orphan Black was one of my largest fandoms on Tumblr. I can only image how ecstatic that fans is to have her in the MCU. What was your response to that?
Immediate elation. On the 12th, engagements surrounding She-Hulk increased by 5,243 percent. We also observed gifsets. We ran across a bunch of old Orphan Black fans who were all like, “Oh, my god, it’s my girl!” There has been a lot of talk regarding She-character Hulk’s and how Tatiana Maslany will portray her in a unique manner. There’s been a lot of talk about how she was able to embrace these many personalities in Orphan Black, and I’m looking forward to drawing some connections in the fandom between that performance and Jennifer Walters’ She-Hulk performance.

Ms. Marvel

Because Kamala Khan is a character that was developed before Tumblr, we also received a fresh look at Ms. Marvel. It seems that she quickly developed a following on the site. We’d seen video of her previously, but what’s the reaction now that she’ll be appearing in real life?
When the Ms. Marvel series first debuted in comic books, it was warmly embraced by fans. Tumblr users were enthralled by the characterisation and plot arcs. On Disney+ Day, there was a lot of buzz around Ms. Marvel. In comparison to the day before, we noticed a 993 percent increase in engagements. People were yelling and yelling about how happy they were to see her.

X-Men and Spider-Man
The new Spider-Man and X-Men animated series were among the day’s greatest Marvel shocks. I know both of those fandoms have a sizable following, even outside of animation, but were there any specific responses to those announcements?
The X-Men film elicited a lot of nostalgia. I’m really looking forward to this one. There was a lot of enthusiasm about it, and a lot of people were delighted that it would take up just where it left off. They’re looking forward to seeing the new animation style. What If…? I believe pushed a lot of people, especially those who are accustomed to live action, to become more interested in animation. As a result, I believe the program helped to prepare the Marvel audience in general to be more accepting of animated shows. People are quite interested to see how they will turn out.

Disney+ Day
Were there any non-Marvel-related Disney+ Day surprises that went viral on Tumblr?
There was the Luca video that was released. That was a very, very strong trend. But, to be honest, it was mostly a Marvel day.
The last time we chatted, we talked about Shang-Chi and how we were waiting for the digital version to come out so people could build GIF sets and celebrate the film. Have you seen it yet, now that it’s available on Disney+?
GIF creators are hard at work. They’re always producing the most beautifully produced and captioned GIF compilations. It’s fantastic to see this one-of-a-kind film get a second round of support on the platform.

Spider-Man: No Way Home
What has been the response to the second Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, which recently debuted?
People are enthralled. There’s a lot of conjecture regarding who may or might not feature in the film. There was a lot of talk regarding Gwen Stacy’s death and the sight of Michael Jackson falling. “Peter, stop bringing your girls to high places!” was a common refrain. And there’s a lot of buzz about Doc Ock.

Eternals
What has Tumblr embraced from Eternals now that it has been released?
People don’t seem to give a damn about Ikaris and Sersi. Drukkari is the ship that stands out.
I should’ve figured it out! Drukkari has taken over every social media platform I’ve come across.
It’s incredible. We first saw them on the list of ships. It debuted at #10 on the ships list on November 8, which is already rather high given the data available. Then it surged up to #3 this week, with 149 percent more interactions than the previous week. As more people tune in to see Eternals, I believe the ship will only grow in size.
What was your response to the main disclosures in that film? Tumblr and Harry Styles go hand in hand, and then there’s the Blade of it all with Black Knight and Dane Whitman. What has been the response to that?
A lot of people were looking forward to seeing the one time Richard Madden and Kit Harington interacted on film. They were ecstatic about it. People are wondering as to what will happen to Kit Harington’s character and how the comic book character will be translated into a cinematic character. Then there’s Harry Styles, of course. I’m talking about the Harry of it all. Harry has a busy couple of weeks ahead of him.

Hawkeye
What superhero-related content — Marvel, DC, or else — are you most looking forward to seeing Tumblr react to in the coming months?
Hawkeye has piqued my interest. I believe Kate Bishop is a tremendously interesting character, and people on Tumblr already think so. When we received the teaser, people instantly began dissecting it. We got a lot of positive feedback on the one image when Clint can be seen using a hearing aid. People are ecstatic about that representation, which exists in comic books but has yet to appear in the MCU. As a result, people are really enthusiastic about it. And there’s a lot of excitement about Lucky the Pizza Dog.
Absolutely.
I’m interested to see how fans respond to this, since Hawkeye has a reputation for being a divisive figure in the MCU. As a result, I’ll be interested to see how the reaction is.
