Miami Marlins hire Kim Ng as MLB’s first female general manager

The Miami Marlins hired Kim Ng as their new general manager, making her the first female general manager in the premier league, the team announced Friday.

Ng, 51, was recently senior vice president of baseball at MLB for nine years, when she was the longest-serving Asian-American woman in charge of baseball. She also served as assistant general manager for the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. She worked with teams that reached eight playoffs and won the World Championship three times.

On behalf of main owner Bruce Sherman and our full ownership group, we are pleased that Kim brings a wealth of championship-level knowledge and experience to the Miami Marlins, said Derek Jeter, CEO of Marlin, in a statement. Your leadership in our baseball team will play an important role on our road to sustainable success. In addition, his extensive work in the development of youth baseball and softball initiatives will strengthen our efforts to promote the game to local youth, as we continue to have a positive influence on the South Florida society.

Ng, who started as an intern in baseball and also spent some time at the headquarters of the Chicago White Sox, will be the highest-rated woman in the baseball world among the league’s 30 teams and will probably be the first woman to serve as general manager in one of the four major men’s sports leagues in North America.

I joined the Grand League as an intern, and after decades of determined action, it was an honor to lead the Miami Marlins as their next general manager, Ng said in a statement. We are building a long-term commitment in South Florida and developing a visionary, cooperative and creative baseball company made up of incredibly talented and dedicated employees who have laid the foundation for our success in recent years.

I don’t take this challenge lightly. When I took over this case, it seemed unlikely that a woman would lead a Major League team, but I’m working hard to achieve my goals. My goal now is to bring the baseball championship to Miami. I humbly and willingly continue to create the winning culture that our fans expect and deserve.

Ng will be the fifth person to lead Marlins’ baseball operations. She succeeded Michael Hill, who was not taken over after the 2020 season.

Everyone who plays in the Major League Baseball is happy with Kim and her chance to win with the Marlins, said MLB commissioner Rob Manfred in a news item. Kim’s nomination will go down in the history of all professional sports and become an important example for the millions of women and girls who love baseball and softball. Jeter became the first black baseball CEO after his group bought Marlins in 2017. He then hired Caroline O’Connor, who as Senior Vice President is one of the longest-serving women in professional sport.

The Marlins made astonishing progress in the third year of the Jeter’s recovery, with their first play-off appearance since 2003 and their first appearance in the wildcard round of the Chicago Cubs. They were picked up by the Atlanta Braves in the National League division.

The Marlins never reached the play-offs in the preseason, and in 2020 they reached the play-offs with the biggest gap (-41) of all teams in the post-season collision. Ng inherited a roster whose current lowest salary for the 2021 season is $46.5 million and a single player, the player runs Miguel Rojas with a $5.5 million club option, as part of the 2022 season contract.

Ng started his baseball career with the White Sox and became Assistant Baseball Director. She worked in the American League for a year and then went to the Yankees. At the age of 29, she became the youngest assistant general manager of MLB and only the second woman to reach this position in the club’s top league. She was Vice President of the Dodgers and Assistant General Manager.

Jean Aftermann, who has served as deputy director of the Yankees since Ng’s move almost 20 years ago, said his predecessor had gender-neutral talents.

At MLB, Ng led the international baseball activities and worked with the headquarters of Major League Clubs and many other baseball leagues and organizations around the world. She led the team that set the policy and ensured compliance with the international signing rules, created the first MLB system for registering international players for signing, managed the signing protocols for international players and concluded agreements with the international winter leagues.

Ng graduated from the University of Chicago, where she played softball and earned her degree in public policy.
